It's official: "The Kentucky 2A Championships® State Basketball Tournament"

Featured Replies

Like I said in another post, you'll soon have the 2A.a type tournament, The 2A.a Tournament® for those under a 600 enrollment, but too big for 1A, but too small for the 2A Tournament, but can't be in a city of more than a 10,000 population.

Kinda like football??????????????

When ever Beechwood wins the state championship we hear constant complaining over whether they are in the "correct class." Is Beechwood ever the best team in the state?

Is this tourney any different than the LIT? Just another mid season tournament.

As the scorekeeper, I love the tournaments. Christmas, Lexington Catholic or an out of state team tourney. Just puts a little more meaning on the game which feels different than a mid season game. I believe the players enjoy it more, also.

I like the All - A.

But not interested in a class system. That's what this is heading us towards.

Have yet to meet an Indiana HS basketball fan who is happy about the Hoosier state's move to classes.... (I'm sure there are some, but I haven't met them yet)

I think doing this actually helps the KHSAA from not classing basketball.

This tournament will be successful and won’t change anything with the March tournament. I see no problem with having it, same as the All A.

Here is a comment from Commissioner Tackett:

“We have long promoted and supported our schools in their efforts to provide opportunities for kids throughout the season. This takes many shapes and this effort obviously is viewed as something a group of our schools want to try. Their objectives and aims are different than our objectives and needs in managing statewide events but they do not conflict and certainly can work together as has been apparent for decades with our work with other regular season events. We wish them well.”

Here are my thoughts:

If whoever is involved wants to provide some opportunities that is great but the name looks like a legal maneuver to usurp the authority of the KHSAA and mislead the public.

Because those other states have thousands of schools where Kentucky only have 200 and something. Classes for basketball will water down the state title and not make it mean much. Nobody will ever know the true state champ. Let’s just give everyone a trophy and a participation ribbon while we’re at it.

THANK YOU. My thoughts exactly. Your 5 best players in your school versus the best 5 at any other school. No need for classes.

There needs to be consistency with classes across all sports. A 2A football school should be a 2A basketball school.

Who determines that?

Lower their standards?? You'll have to explain that further. As someone said previously it's just another mid-season tournament. The kids like playing in tournaments. It is about the kids right? It doesn't affect the Sweet 16. My prediction is 8+ pages of BGP's debating something that needs no debate.

Seems like that gets left behind a lot.

2A football classifications are established by the KHSAA for the KHSAA football alignment.

This is not a tournament being put on by the KHSAA. The name for this tournament was established completely independent of the KHSAA by the individuals who are putting the tournament on...same as the All "A"...same as the LIT, same as the KOB.

Just give every school in Kentucky a state championship trophy before every season so everyone feels good. Kentucky can become the only state that proudly boasts "Every basketball team is a state champion here" and not be joking. It takes 1 or 2 good players to be a state contender in high school basketball regardless of Class you play in. The entitled few get their way again!

Holmes will win the 9th region every year.

With the list of enrollments you sent us, They are the only 9th region team that fit those categories.

Where is CovCath in this mix? I think they would be in the smallest 131 schools in the state based on enrollment or do they treat all boys schools differently. Lloyd I think is the only other school outside the smallest 131 and under 1000 enrollment.

The hyperbole on this thread is funny. If this were called the Joe Schmo Memorial tournament no one would care. But since it’s the 2A, people freak out. Nothing is being watered down, the sacred Sweet 16 isn’t being affected, cancelled or changed. It’s a mid season tourney for certain sized schools. That’s it.
