I edited my initial post.

Well looks like teams figured out that if you stop Notre Dame run game, they aren't that good. Stanford putting it to them now.

Herbstreit has:

1. Auburn

2. Clemson

3. Oklahoma

4. Georgia

5. Wisconsin

6. Alabama

Edited by Wireman

Wisconsin is still undefeated. If they somehow find a way to beat Ohio State in the conference championship wouldn’t they be in? It’d be kind of hard to keep them out imo.

I think Herbstreit had a good point. If the higher ranked teams win out their conference titles it's very simple.

You end up with Clemson, Oklahoma, Auburn and Wisconsin. It seems like only Oklahoma will be heavily favored in their title game.

Those championship games are going to be huge. Crazy that some conferences were debating the need for them a few years back.

I hate how late season losses are so costly. Alabama loses a tough game on the road at arch rival Auburn and it could keep them out. Auburn loses two early season games to Clemson and unranked LSU and they are somehow now in the driver's seat. That's just weird to me.

If Bama makes it, they would be the first team to drop their last game and still make the playoffs? Seems odd a team can be on a losing streak and make the playoffs.

1. Your sample size is three years. Not a lot to go off from that.

2. Your point would be more salient if they were playing next week.

3. A streak constitutes more than a singular loss.

At this point I really believe Oklahoma is the best team in the country. Nobody is stopping their offense. Nobody. They are going to put up 35 on any team they play. Their defense is just good enough to keep the other team under 35. Auburn is the only team I think that can beat Oklahoma. Clemson and Alabama don't have the offensive firepower to get in to a shoot out.

This! People try to act like college football is great because the regular season is like a playoff. Well in a playoff system you know if and when you lose you are out. They say it makes the whole season count and matter. Yet you are completely correct. People definitely put more value on a late season loss than early. If Bama lost to Auburn the first game of the year and then has been undefeated since, they would be talked about as being definitely a top 4 team in the country.

Yet Auburn has 2 early season losses, but since they are playing great at the end of the season people are valuing that more. If we are going to do that and reward people more for getting better throughout the season. Then you have to have set things in place that puts people in. It needs to be 8 teams and be done with it.

But that does give teams an incentive to play a strong out of conference opponent early in the season, rather than Directional St. or Cupcake U. I like seeing OSU and OU play early in the season or Alabama playing a strong team early in the season each year.

I think it will get to 8 teams at some point which is fine, I just don't think I'll agree with how those are picked anymore than most don't like this. However these aren't the final rankings let's wait one more week to see how it actually ends up.

I like it at 4. Going to 8 further reduces the regular season long impact of getting to the playoff and opens the door for a fluke team to win it. By fluke team I mean a team that everyone knows is really not the best team in the nation but they get a couple breaks and the right matchup and win it all. It can happen in football.

If Bama misses it then doesn't that show the regular season obviously wasn't as important? Or what about Wisconsin if they lose? That means teams who weren't as consistent every week and had 2 losses made it over teams with 1 loss.

The majority of a teams games is conference. So going to 8 and having 5 automatic teams for winning their conference doesn't take away from the season then, because you have to make it to your conference championship to have a shot.

How about we go to 6 and give #1 and 2 a bye?

I prefer 4 but would be ok with 6 as long as there were no automatic qualifiers.

That would work for me.
