I said earlier in the thread that Lavar's initial response would either back up my claim or refute it, the former seems to be the case. I will say that at least he seems smart enough (for the time being) and listen to the families legal councils advice of keeping his mouth shut.

The tough guy image that doesn't care what anyone thinks is a bad road when it's concerning the law. Rather than coming out and saying it's not good, or saying that it's no big deal, he should have just said nothing.

 

I know if I were in the spotlight just like his family is and my son was arrested in a foreign country I wouldn't say a damn word to the media about it other than maybe refer them to the family's legal council, which would obviously say nothing as well. Sometimes intelligence is taken for granted and for the most part Lavar either doesn't have it or he just feels entitled. I'm not sure which one it is, but he has at least listened to the attorneys and shut his mouth this time around. That's certainly a step in the right direction, but I'm not sure how long it will last.

 

For the record, I hope I'm right that these kids are able to get a plea deal and get back to the States as soon as possible. I hate to see almost anyone go to prison if it's not a violent crime or a repetitive offender, most people in fact do deserve a second chance. I just hope Lavar doesn't ruin that aspect for these kids, because he is certainly capable of that. The Chinese Government doesn't care about Big Baller Brand any more than you or I care about the Chinese basketball leagues.

True but fortunately for all those involved I am sure the Chinese Government loves the NCAA investing money in China which is probably the only thing that keeps them out of jail. And that's wishful thinking on my part at this stage.

 

On the other side of the fence, I don't think the Chinese Government can justify treating their own citizens so harsh for the same crime and let what will be seen as some rich Americans off the hook with no jail time.

I wonder if Trump coincidentally being in China right now will impact things at all?? While I cannot believe how incredibly stupid these three guys were to do this, I do feel a bit sorry for them because I would bet they are sitting in that hotel scared to death right now...

I am not sure how it can be accomplished but those players need to get out of China.

It's certainly a tricky situation. The only good thing the UCLA kids have going for them in this is that if the Chinese want to sweep this under the rug, the majority of their citizens will likely never know it turned out that way or that it ever happened unless they have already broke the story on state media outlets.

This is what most people are missing. Why in the world would you send college players to China for a regular season game?

IMO that’s how you know he’s worried and that this is a big deal. If he’s keeping his mouth shut you know things are serious.

Correct, a first offense Class D felony in Kentucky would likely earn you a diversion or unsupervised probation. Maybe supervised probation with an ankle bracelet for 30 days or so.

 

Agree on China being excessive as well as Kentucky being insufficient. I doubt these kids will likely see any prison time in China though. My guess is they take a guilty plea and are told to leave the country and not come back ever again.

Here in Kentucky it would take around two weeks to see a felony judge in most counties, so the month for China isn't too far off, but I do believe it's "up to a month" as they stated.

 

My guess is this one is sped up a bit as far as Chinese standards go and if it's not, I wouldn't be offended as it could really teach these kids something that apparently they didn't learn at a younger age. These kids have already been let out of jail and are allowed to stay in a nice hotel, so don't expect much to come of this, but even having to spend a month in the hotel rather than going about their daily lives, playing basketball in the USA may wake them up some. At least I am hopeful that it does.
