Kurds attacked by Turkey in Iraq and Syria

Recommended Posts

Turkey has been a long time US ally, we've had bases there for decades. There has been some issues from time to time with them though.

I'm pretty sure they are a NATO member as well.

How serious of an issue is this? Pentagon Backed Forces means that the Kurds are with us and they bombed them, right?

They've been using the threat of terrorism as spread by ISIS and Al-Qaeda before that to crack down on Kurdish political opposition for some time now. Started by expelling all their representatives from Turkish politics. They're obviously taking the next step.

So their belief is that the Kurds are with ISIS/Al-Qaeda and they are using that as an excuse to attack the Kurds? Meanwhile we are backing the Kurds? Is that correct?

No. The Kurds want an autonomous country for themselves. Their "homeland" is Northern Iraq, Syria, and Southern Turkey. A defection of a sizable ethnic minority in the south could cause a domino affect in that part of Turkey and destabilize the country. This is just a different circle of warfare inside of a giant blob of destruction.

Mexitucky has it exactly as I'd put it. They don't actually believe that ISIS al Al-Qaeda is involved in Kurdish separatism, but if they dress it up that way, it makes it harder for nations around the world to call them out for political repression of the Kurdish minority.

So the Kurds are or aren't backed by the Pentagon?
