15th Region becoming a Super Regional in 17-18?

Featured Replies

Word is a vote was held on Tuesday and was approved for the 15th region to do a "Super Regional" where every team in that region makes it to the regional tournament. This will apparently be for all sports in the 15th region. Boys & Girls basketball as well as baseball and softball.

Vote passed! There will be district tournaments with a consolation to determine 1 through 4 seeds. A 4 from one district will play a 1 from another and so on. The location is yet to be determined with respect to having all games at the EXPO or having the first round at higher seeds home, but there will be another meeting in a few weeks to determine it. Was good to see Julian Tackett and Butch Cope in the mountains helping hammer this out!

If this goes well for the 15th region, do we see other regions start to do the same thing?
Yes. I don't agree with how they seed but it's a move in the right direction.

Why don't they use the regular season seedings, assuming all teams play one another twice like we do in the 56th? That would eliminate a consolation game.

I hate this.

I 2nd that!!!

Consolation game increases revenue for member schools. You could also get ties with regular season and get into some exotic tie breaker scenarios. Doing it this way let's the seeding be determined on the court.

KHSAA eliminated consolation games in the Sweet 16 in 1961. The NCAA eliminated consolation games in 1981. Interesting to see the argument of them being beneficial coming back into vogue.

I understand that added revenue may be a reason for the district games but I'm not sure I'm a fan. I'd rather see them use multiple sources to determine the regional rankings then tip it off.

How many schools make up the 15th region?

Why even have districts if everyone makes the regional tournament anyway? Makes the regular season meaningless.

Sounds like the same problem I have with Football where many districts send every team to the playoffs. KHSAA really does a disservice to districts in Football and now it looks like the same will be done in basketball as well if others follow suit and do what the 15th did.

I had heard the setup would be losers of the district consolation games would have a blind draw (similar to regional draw, can't draw who you just lost to,) and they would draw the winners (or 3 seeds) of the consolation games, games would be played at the 3 seed home court, money would be split between those 2 teams only. Then, the 4 winners of those games would again have a blind draw and they would draw the district runnerups (or 2 seeds), games would be played on the 2 seeds home floor and the money would be split just between those 2 teams, the winners of those 4 games would then advance to the Expo Center and have a blind draw with the District Champions (or 1 seeds) for the final 8 teams left, is this not the way they set it up??? This way the district champions were guaranteed of being in the Final 8, a reward for winning the district.

That just gave me a headache......
