I know it's Ohio, but why would you tell people...

I know it's stupid, right?! But I think they have to announce those by law.

They are required to post where these are taking place. Apparently, not everyone gets the memo because they always get someone, lol. I think it is the same idea as a Police Officer at night has to have some sort of indication that he is there like his parking lights on or something like that if he is sitting and running his radar on cars. I think I saw that was a law also.

The KSP does the same thing.

Why would you tell people where you're going to have an OVI checkpoint?

Here's the location of tonight's OVI checkpoint - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

Has nothing to do with Ohio. There was a Supreme Court decision about 25 years ago that stated unannounced checkpoints were in violation of the 4th amendment, and basically amounted to detention without reasonable suspicion. All states that operate sobriety checkpoints (there are 10 or so that don't) must announce their locations.

Yep. They have to by law because of the 4th amendment. Interestingly enough, they also have to do them in a place where there is another way around. They can't do them unless there is a bypass of the checkpoint.

The signage on the expressways in Northern KY this morning made me smile a little bit. Something like "The luck of the Irish won't help you if you drive drunk"!

I know around here if there is a road check going on there is normally one officer designated to go after anyone that does a U-turn or quick turnaround to avoid the check point.

Not in KY.

We were in NKY today, I saw that one on 275.

Is it really true there has to be another route that can be used?

If you think about it just about anywhere one is set up there is another way to go to get where you are going. Most will set them up in an area that you won't see them until after you passed the last place to turn to go around. Then if you make a sudden u-turn once you see the checkpoint, someone is going to pull you over to see what is going on.

When I lived in Middlesboro 3 decades ago the police would set up a check point as you came into Middlesboro from Tennessee through the Cumberland Gap. Tennessee was wet and Middlesboro was not, it was like shooting fish in a barrel on Friday and Saturday nights. There was NO other way around that was remotely convenient either.
