Should the President Attempt to Work with Those Who Boycott the Inauguration?

Featured Replies

The John Lewis thread got me to thinking....

We want a POTUS that is willing and able to work with both sides of the aisle, or at least we should want that.

My question is, should we expect the POTUS to make the attempt to work with those who aren't willing to show him the most basic level of respect for the office he's assuming?

I personally think the POTUS owes it to the electorate to work with all elected officials, but I can understand why some may feel otherwise.

And before this thread goes down that path, yes I'm aware that members of Congress boycotted President Obama's inauguration and I find that equally as deplorable. I didn't know about it at the time though. Probably because he had more self-control with his use of Twitter than PE Trump does, but back to the purpose of the thread....

Trump ran on a premise that he's not a politician so he shouldn't start acting like one now. He should work with everybody and anybody who is willing to help make America great again! I'm so done with D vs. R.

Should? Of course.

But in my experiences following politics, "I am willing to work with the other side" means that person wants full on acquiescence; thus, the gridlock.

I think he should and will. Chuck Schumer is the best example. He is basically pulling a Tip O'Neil with Reagan . Trump and Schumer have a long realtionship and will be able to work together.

You could also point to the Never Trump crowd in the GOP now . Which I was apart of for a long time.

What would it mean to not work with them? Veto bills they voted for? Ask Paul Ryan to bury the bills they sponsor?

Yes he should. Prove them all wrong.

In an ideal world, the POTUS should work with everyone, value their input and make decisions he thinks is best for the people or country as a whole.

I think, if you don't kiss DJT's ---, he won't work with you. If you do, you are gold. Makes no difference of your party affiliation.

Sure, he should. Running the federal government should not be a teen-age urinating contest.

He absolutely should work with their disrespectful behinds.

Absolutely yes he should work with them or at least try to. I think that has been a big failure for our last two presidents. Even when McConnell said his goal was to make sure Obama does not get reelected, Obama should have pushed hard to work with Republicans and get more compromise. It has been the biggest failure of our government and it is why Congress is held in such low esteem

I hope he does but don't think anything he tries will work. Think about it...they are saying he is not their president...that he is not legitimately elected. How do you work with people who boycott you and call you not legitimate? Also, he has a R congress so what does he really need John Lewis and the other Dems who say he is not legitimate for anyway?

Yes he should, even said he'd work with Rep. Lewis if Lewis was willing.

Should? Of course.

Yes, yes and yes.

Some but not all. I agree with what was posted earlier, he and Schurmer will find some common ground to move. He may work better with Schurmer than Ryan. Mcconnell has sold out to DJT already. Pelosi no chance.

DJT has as many problems in house as he does across the way.
