2/3s of the states need to ratify even if Congress approves - long journey.

 

But a worthwhile journey to take.

If it gets to the states it will get ratified rather quickly, every state rep and senator aspires to go to DC...this just opens the path for them.

I think the limits in Cruz's proposal are too short. I say make the limit a 20 year total from any combination of Senate and House terms. Cruz's proposal limiting House members to 3 two year terms is way too few/short and has no chance of passing.

I agree with what you are saying, but let's make it 12 across the board...House of Rep gets up to 5 reelects...senators can get 1...

Term limits will do absolutely nothing to lessen corruption and will actually cause new problems unforeseen by short-sighted talk of "career politicians". They're simply not a good idea.

Guess I'm the only one on the side of thinking this is unnecessary. I view it in the category of "you can't beat them so change the rules".

I completely agree. Everyone keeps calling for term limits, but yet we as an electorate keep voting the same people in over and over again. Term limits shouldn't be necessary...our right to vote should effectively make term limits unnecessary.

This is where I stand. Not in favor and never have been. We can impose term limits if we so choose...

This is the sticky wicket. Many a representative aspires to become a senator at some point in time.

So, I'm a limited term congressman who can either line my pockets as fast as I can because I'm gonna be out in short order, or as an unlimited congressman like good ol Byrd from West By God Virginia, I can pace myself.

I'm torn. At an initial reaction level I like the idea. At the same time though I worry that it could almost lead to party control over individual congressmen that we didn't have before since they couldn't have the clout to buck their party if it became necessary. Career politicians or Tammany Hall? :no: That's not a choice I am fond of, so I need to think more on this.

There definitely is an opportunity for unintended consequences.

 

Is there any historical data where term limits in local/state elections caused the problems you envision?

This is why I've never been for it . There's no good solution but I'm not sold on term limits being the best solution.

I learned it from watching you guys the last 8 years.
