January 4, 20179 yr There definitely is an opportunity for unintended consequences. Is there any historical data where term limits in local/state elections caused the problems you envision? Not sure about local/state elections, but look no further than our outgoing presidents. Of course I would counter by comparing to FDR as the only president to serve longer than two terms so there are problems all around. At the end of the day, this isn't as simple as we all want it to be. Something about winning elections seems to corrupt people.
January 4, 20179 yr 12 consecutive years sounds right. So two terms for Senate and 6 for House. Are term limits a silver bullet? No. But As of now it seem there are some in both houses and in both parties that know they have it the Peter Principle limit of politics and do not want to get a 'real job'. So they just run every 2 or 6 years and accumulate more formal and informal power each term and then focus on bashing their newbie oppenent each cycle until they have only token or no opposition. The other thing would be to cut the lucrative pensions. Cash 401K matching plans and some help with medical until 65. Period. And that does not take an amendment. Another thing I saw on FB - let them get their healthcare from the VA...probably cheaper - and they will probaby fix the VA finally.

Term limits will do absolutely nothing to lessen corruption and will actually cause new problems unforeseen by short-sighted talk of "career politicians". They're simply not a good idea. I used to be hot and heavy on the term limits trail. Then, I did more studying, and this is where I am now...cautious.

January 4, 20179 yr It is not uncommon for Constitutional amendment s to take a decade or more to be ratified by 3/4s of the states correct? The last couple amendments had a 7 year limitation to be ratified. The failed amendment that dealt with equality for women died due to not being ratified within 7 years.
January 4, 20179 yr I completely agree. Everyone keeps calling for term limits, but yet we as an electorate keep voting the same people in over and over again. Term limits shouldn't be necessary...our right to vote should effectively make term limits unnecessary. As long as lobbying, money, donations etc remain part of the political process, term limits will do little to prevent corruption. I would like to see McConnell go, but I was not about to vote for Grimes. I am sure there are Democrats who do the same thing. Would like to see a change, but will not vote for a Republican.

January 4, 20179 yr This is the sticky wicket. Many a representative aspires to become a senator at some point in time. I don't have a problem with a representative becoming a Senator. I agree with concerns about term limits and that is why I don't want them too short. There is value in experience. I mainly want to limit career Congressional politicians. I see 20 years total as a good number, perhaps even 24 years. That could be 3 two year terms as a rep and 3 terms as Senator; 1 term as Senator and 9 terms as a rep; any combo you want but the limit is 24. And you can't have 22 years in and then run for the Senate because that would push you past the 24 year limit if you won.
