So just what is wrong with Drew Barker?

Featured Replies

Can Drew Barker get a medical redshirt? With Kentucky all but assured of a bowl game at this point, wouldn't it make more sense to give him that redshirt to maximize the amount of time he'll still have left at UK? Let him heal without rush and then participate in late season/bowl practices.

He already redshirted. I know the NCAA sometimes grants players a sixth year, but I don't think it is an automatic process where they can just declare that he is taking a medical redshirt at this point.

Seem to be two QB's who bring very different talents to the table, but they share the same struggle (turnovers).

Part of me agrees with UKMF, in that 5-1 speaks for itself. Another part of me agrees with HT that Barker is simply the better QB of the two.

I don't really see them being different. Johnson in my opinion isn't much of a runner. And when he does there's a good change he will fumble. He definitely doesn't jump out as that much better of a runner than Drew. In the passing game it's not even close. I would love to see how Drew would prefer now. With the improvement in the oline play and Snell coming on in the run game, I think we would see more of what Drew did in the first half against S. Miss.

Good point. I'd say there is a possibility, but there is also a process. And that's, of course, if he'd even want to do it.

This version of the offense is run based with a Wildcat formation for a huge % of the plays. Can't compare that to Drew Barker short time taking snaps. The SEC East is just bad this year because you typically won't win many games running a wildcat 40% of the time.

I'll take a healthy Barker all day long. He will earn his staring job back next spring. No Doubt.

I've heard multiple media members say Gunner Hoak is 5 times better than either Johnson or Barker. I havent' watched him personally but I've heard that probably 8-10 times this season.

At this juncture who would the players respond better to? I suspect it would be Johnson. Whether or not he's mainly responsible for it, he's gotten them to where they are today.

They'd be crazy to pull Johnson with how they are winning. Makes no sense to do that. The one loss was to 'bama. Not exactly a game they should or could have one.

Agreed. He was hurt during the Florida game if I am not mistaken.

I have heard it said that the start of his back issues were early second half of Southern Miss. He was throwing darts on target the first half of that game then all of a sudden he had nothing. Back issues can be progressive. Get a bump and a disc gets out of whack, puts pressure on a nerve, then muscles start the spasm cycle, etc.

I've been there. So jacked up they could not get me on an X-ray table. Got a LARGE shot of morphine and everything relaxed and kind of re-aligned. It took a long time to recuperate though. Forty years later, still having issues.

I havent seen or heard in a while when or if he will be back or even what is actually wrong to keep him out so long.

Does anyone know?

It is not easy living up to the hype sometimes. To much presssure sometimes.

I tailgated with the family several games ago. Great people. It is lower back and he was listed as day to day. He did play injured the last game he played in. Best wishes to the young man on a speedy recovery. Hope he gets his job back.

^This!

While the medical red shirt would not be automatic for Barker, it is still a high possibility. So while Johnson is doing a good job as the backup and UK looks to be going to a bowl, why would the coaching staff risk burning Barkers medical red shirt by playing him after the injury?

The best quarterback is always the one who has never played a game. I'm sure you've heard that plenty of times @Wireman.

Yeah I'm not downing anyone. Just passing along what others have said. For now I think they have to stick with Johnson though

I agree. I really hope that Hoak is that good. But until I see him play in an actual game, I can't say that he is better than Johnson or Barker either one, much less 5 times better. I've just heard that talk waaaaay to many times in the past to believe it before a player actually takes a snap outside of practice.

You have to be able to prove the player was medically unable to perform in both redshirt seasons to get a 6th year. The process of what proof is required varies from conference to conference, but there needs to be documentation of injury issues in both redshirt seasons to even get to the starting point...
