I keep hearing this, and sorry, I don't see how anyone gets a sense of entitlement over going 1-9 and making the playoffs, or getting a little trinket trophy at the end of the season. I haven't seen any high school memorabilia displayed in any of my friends houses commemorating a 1 game playoff run, or any mantles filled with youth football trophies. The "everyone gets a trophy is ruining america" is such a huge overstatement of a problem that doesn't exist. We've got plenty of problems in this country, but 1-9 teams making the playoffs isn't causing any of them.

My point was that in this "PC gone crazy" country today, to me it seems that rewarding failure has become the thing to do. I just don't believe that a last place team deserves to advance. IMO the message should be something like "we weren't good enough to advance, let's come back next season and work harder, get better to "Earn" a playoff bid. Nothing more - nothing less. I wasn't trying to start anything, is jmo. :thumb:

If you look at it as teams playing an eleven game season instead of ten, you're much less likely to get worked up or even care about it!

If you think about what the KHSAA did to appease the large mostly rural public schools in the state in football it should erode any confidence in any decisions they make.

 

- They created 2 extra classes to reduce the number of teams that have to compete with Trinity and at the time St. X. Double the amount of Track/XC and 6 times as much as any other sport. Football is a unique sport, but does it really warrant 6 classes in this state?

- They put all teams in all classes in districts according to geography, except they create a super district with four of the historically better programs in the state so they eliminate each other in the opening rounds of the playoffs further reducing the number of schools which have to face these teams. Oh yeah and they had to throw geography out the door to accomplish this.

- They choose to flip flop what side of the state the super district faces in the semi-finals - again to reduce the threat from the schools in the super district.

 

Any objective person looks at this and sees how silly it is.

So a long bus trip to get a good tail whooping is rewarding someone?? That gives someone a sense of entitlement and sets them down the road for future failure?? Let's not make more of it than it really is.

More than just silly. Most of what you list here could be challenged as unconstitutional since the decision are arbitrary in nature and impact 'similarly situated students' in different ways.

For those of you making the comparison to basketball why not do football exactly like basketball? Classification doesn't matter. CAL and DeSales proved that. Let's play a district tournament with teams playing 2 (maybe 3) games in a week. Winner and runner up advances to region. Then they play 3 more games that week. Then let's have a sweet 16 football tournament 4 games Tuesday, 4 games Wednesday and so on. That's only 11 more games in 3 weeks for the 2 teams that make the championship and it's even shorter then the w week playoff we have now.

 

You know why we don't do that? Because football isn't basketball. You'll never convince me that any good comes from some of those first round match-ups. Trinity is looking at a first round game with Ohio County who apparently dresses less the 20 players. Last time Trinity played a team that finished 5th in their district 2 of those players got to take ambulance rides. I'm sure they have great memories of their playoff experience. Seneca gets to go play Scott County and get another drubbing. Neither team will get anything positive out of that.

80-90% of teams get in playoffs. Those that don't are more likely happy their season is over. Playing 10 games regular season & getting so many teams in playoffs is near equivalent to all schools playing 11 regular season & half as many in playoffs. Plus, no one can hardly complain they should have gotten in.

This is not an easy question to answer. But I think it was a mistake for KY to go to 6 classes. There should never be a situation where virtually everyone makes the playoffs and I am not in favor of bye's. You should have to play 15 to win and I would want to. But there are not many elite programs in this state so it is set up for programs like Mayfield, Belfry, Bowling Green, Highlands Trinity to win 20 championships in a row. Those programs dont even get challenged until maybe the 4th round if at all. To win championships you should have to play 5 brutally tough games in a row. and that just hasnt been the case.

 

Even in four classes, the playoffs were far from brutal each round for the champs.
