Your joking right, this subject comes up at least 3-4 times a year. While I agree that there are too many teams in the playoffs, it is a money maker for the schools and the KHSAA.

 

It should be a money maker for schools, unless they play an opponent who rents a field. Then you end up breaking even or having to pay if the gate is low. This should be a separate thread: Should visiting teams have to split the payment for field rental in the playoffs?

Use the same format in basketball that way there is only 1 champ! Every year there is a question at the finals posted on here about who can beat who and I say we settle on the field.

B) Reward District Champions

C) Eliminate an automatic playoff bid because you are 1-9 in a 4-Team District

D) Provide a "seeded" format to balance out strong vs. weak Districts and Regions

(that rewards a team for winning their district plus eliminates that 1 / 4 matchup that when their honest, most of the 4th place teams have had a bad season, sometime w/ 0 wins and their kids really don't want to play, be embarrassed again) .....

2.) Top 2 teams go, would eliminate a playoff round and definitely would put the better teams in post season. This format puts the best / most deserving teams in while still allowing a good team that may have had aa bad night, had to play with key players injured or any number of "mulligans" that might have affected a loss.

 

My point for either of the 2 options I listed is that it eliminates the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality that seems to have taken over in all areas of life today and frankly is jmo has spoiled a generation or two as feeling "entitled".

I keep hearing this, and sorry, I don't see how anyone gets a sense of entitlement over going 1-9 and making the playoffs, or getting a little trinket trophy at the end of the season. I haven't seen any high school memorabilia displayed in any of my friends houses commemorating a 1 game playoff run, or any mantles filled with youth football trophies. The "everyone gets a trophy is ruining america" is such a huge overstatement of a problem that doesn't exist. We've got plenty of problems in this country, but 1-9 teams making the playoffs isn't causing any of them.

There should never be a situation where virtually everyone makes the playoffs and I am not in favor of bye's. You should have to play 15 to win and I would want to. But there are not many elite programs in this state so it is set up for programs like Mayfield, Belfry, Bowling Green, Highlands Trinity to win 20 championships in a row. Those programs dont even get challenged until maybe the 4th round if at all. To win championships you should have to play 5 brutally tough games in a row. and that just hasnt been the case.

I dont know if I would go that far.... but at the minimum I would think that the Second Round game should be competitive and the Regional Finals and Semi-Finals should be tough games.

 

Even in some of the very best football state's you will find teams blow out their competition through the first two rounds, same for when we had a 4 class system, so saying it should be 5 brutally tough games simply is not going to happen.

Here is my dream world scenario (assuming we stay with 6 Classes)... I have looked at this multiple ways and still feel this is the best way to

Here is my playoff system:

1. Top three teams per District make it.

 

2. Each Semi-State is seeded and the four District Winners are guaranteed a Top 4 overall seed and a First Round Bye. Seeding is determined by a computer based system factoring in S.O.S, wins against higher classifications, and quality of Out of State Competition.

 

3. First, Second, and Third Round Games are hosted by the Higher Seed meeting KHSAA standards. If the field condition, locker room situation, or seating situation do not meet KHSAA requirements the visiting team is allowed to file a formal appeal for an agreed upon neutral site.

 

4. The Semi-Finals are hosted at a neutral Regional Host Site approved and selected by the KHSAA. The higher seeded team is the "Home" team and will get to have home seating and home locker room usage at the venue.

 

5. Cost of admission increase after the Second Round to cover travel expenses for the teams involved. The KHSAA manages the Semi-Finals and the financials associated with it. After properly reimbursing the teams competing across the classes, any additional funds can be used to reimburse smaller schools who file for a financial hardship if they prove they lost money travelling in their First or Second Round Games.

I honestly feel like this is without a doubt the best way to work within our current 6-Class System.

 

What critiques would anyone have?

 

I truly think that what creates the majority of the non-competitive games is the fact that we have 4 teams per District make it. That 4 seed is the killer and to this day I am still not sure a 4 seed, even in the most competitive of Districts, has ever advanced to the Semi-Finals. Sure a 4 seed may upset a 1 seed from time to time.. but they have never actually advanced to the meaningful realms of the playoffs.

 

With my system I am sure someone will be upset that if they have clearly the second best team but #1 is in their District that they are automatically demoted to a 5 seed behind the winner of a weak District, but it still stands to reason that they can prove it on the field as that weak District Winner will be a 4 seed and sitting waiting for them in Round 2.

That I definitely agree with!

Need to reduce the amount of qualifying teams from each district. Only the 1st and 2nd place teams advance. I would love to see Kentucky have their High School Championship over with before December.
