Lexington-Herald abandons it position as a critical source for Ky High School results

Featured Replies

So disappointed in this morning's Herald. It had a great article on Scott Co.'s win over Tates Creek and a short list of about 10 scores. Other than that, one would never know that Ky HS football kicked off last night. Earlier this summer they moved their printing to Louisville which resulted in earlier cutoffs and layoffs of longtime employees. If the industry is moving to electronic communication, shouldn't this allow for later cutoffs and more thorough results? Herald hasn't had a Reds night game result since the change. Today they had a short article and boxscore on Thursday's game. Highschool basketball is going to be mega-disappointing.

Looks to me like BGP's critical role might be expanding.

Their cut-off time is pretty early now, but If you follow Josh Moore on Twitter I think he does an excellent job with dwindling resources of the Herald Leader. In my opinion he provides a lot more information then Mike Fields did on social media.(that is not a knock on Mike) But when you have message boards, websites, and social media, what's the need for a paper.

I haven't picked up a newspaper in over 5 years.

All the results are online 8-10 hours before newspapers are delivered. I would say only a tiny % of fans use a newspaper to get their scores

It's unfortunate but the medium of newspapers is about dead if not already. I used to LOVE reading a newspaper, especially an afternoon edition. Reporting was an art form then. I mean it's extremely portable, needs no batteries or re-charging, doesn't cost much, can be used for other things once you're done reading it. But I and that medium are dinosaurs and all dinosaurs die out.

Well @mcpapa is still around, so not all dinosaurs die out. LOL

YES! Keep hope alive!! :lol2:

This is sad to hear. Up here in NKY the Enquirer went from bad to worse once they moved their printing up to Columbus. I am 34, and I am a newspaper kind of guy. I remember how awesome it was to come home from football practice and read this KY Post especially on Thursdays when tnhey highlighted a player/team and previewed all the upcoming games. The Enquirer never did that good of a job and now its abysmal.

Same thing happened in NKY/Cincinnati area wen printing was moved to Columbus.

ironically the Lex Herald would have the complete Reds box score and story on a night game and the Cincinnati Enquirer would not. Sad that won't be the case anymore.

It is somewhat perplexing that with all the advances in technology that a newspaper would have earlier deadlines than in the 60s/70s/80s.

I was a big fan of newspapers, and used to read at least the local newspaper everyday, and usually USA Today as well. And the Sunday paper was a whole ritual that took up at least an hour or two. I haven't picked up a physical newspaper in at least a few years. New is available online instantly, as are content/story pieces. Newspapers deliver info late, create trash, and deliver content you're not always interested in. I don't find them portable at all...they take up space in your briefcase/bag, won't fit in your pocket, and needs to be spread out to read.

I never imagined a day where I wouldn't read the newspaper. I'm in my late 40's, and will likely never look at a newspaper again.

Even though stories can be submitted electronically, and layout and design are much easier, there are two primary issues that are driving earlier deadlines. One, with papers being printed out of town instead of locally, they must come off the presses earlier to account for travel to the final destination. Also, presses are printing multiple papers (ie, Columbus is printing the Dispatch and the Enquirer). Production must be started earlier to account for the running of multiple papers.

Only when I get a haircut, so maybe three times a year.
