OlderCoach vs OldestCoach, let's change this subject a bit. Match ages and we may need to change titles! Back on subject, I read all my UK news on Kentucky.com and KSR. Sometimes via Danville on line paper. My wife has to have the CJ delivered for what reason I do not know. I can tell you for sure high school coaches and radio broadcasters are using BGP and KHSAA scoreboards for results via their phones.

Printing in Louisville is hurting the H-L, but it almost had to be done.

 

Obviously the huge con is the way way way more earlier deadlines (because people still want their paper on their doorstep at 6 a.m. instead of 7:30 AND you are at the mercy of the C-J's deadlines. Hard to print two megapapers at the same time, not to mention the folding, ad inserting and stacking/bundling.

 

At the same time, there's a ton of stuff on the Herald-Leader website about preps and Josh Moore is good on social media.

 

Also, the days of picking up the paper to see a list of scores are long gone (and should be). It's a waste when you can get them on the evening highlights (Friday Night Lights) or on your phone or a website.

 

If the list of scores are a reason for hating the H-L, it's petty.

I love flipping through the paper and I love reading the sports pages. I get scores from social media but there is nothing like Sat morning with a cup of coffee and the sports page. I don't care if I know the results prior to having the paper. It's the story of the game and the quotes from the coaches & players. The cool pictures that are taken.

The Daily Independent is in Ashland, KY and covers our Region very well. Aaron Snyder, Matt Sparks, Zack Klemme, Rocky Stanley, John Flavell, etc cover many games and put personal stories about individual players in the paper throughout the week. Awesome coverage and from the sounds of others on this thread, a throwback to the old days.

"Hate" is inaccurate. "Disappointed" is on target. None of us BGPs wait for the scores on Saturday morning. It was the richness brought to us by professional reporters describing the gladiators performance in the arena, it was the coaches comments, and the jubilation victors were able to share. It was sharing the pain of the vanquished opponent and the anticipation of following his efforts to rise off the deck next week. This dinosaur can only offer his opinion and that is clearly the demise of the daily newspaper will certainly be a loss to future generations.

I long for those days too, but they are not coming back. Can't. Won't.

 

Journalism, in the dead-tree (newspaper) form, is struggling. I'm glad I got out when I did (although it was NOT at my own choice). I've landed in a better place financially as well as family wise (no late nights, no weekends).

 

However, journalism is alive and well online, thanks to blogs, social media and video. For example, it didn't take me long to look up all those stats/notes I had for my "Best of the Bluegrass" (which I plan on doing each week). In the "good ole" days, that would have been near impossible and way more time consuming considering there are only three daily papers (Elizabethtown, Louisville, Lexington) that I could buy on a Sunday morning in Hardin County or have delivered to me.

 

There are still some good stories/photos online because you can attach audio/video (so you can see and hear the emotion) and you can run a photo gallery (hard to do in print) and run photos in color (very expensive to do them in print). Some papers attach full stat packages (including defense and play by play) online, but you'll never see them in print (and hardly saw them in print in the good ole days).

 

I know Josh Moore and Jason Frakes. Good guys. Good workers. But they're hamstrung when it comes to deadlines (ridiculously early compared to days gone by), staffing (see cutbacks) and expectations (people expect to see statewide stuff in those papers, not just LOU for Jason and not just LEX for Josh).

 

They're in a no-win situation.

 

I'm not sure the Herald-Leader abandoned its post as much as the post was closed/moved/shut down (because of other options due to online advancements/growth/opportunities).

As a beginning coach I had 2 teams, grades 5 thru 8. No stat person so I had someone film games on the old tapes and I then reviewed and got stats. Wrote the articles for the local newspaper and sent them in. The kids and parents told me numerous times how they looked forward to the paper each week. Always positive and found a way to complement each player in a years time. I guess you guys are correct that is all in the past. PS: Older Coach wins, he is 1 year 5 months older!

It's not false, since the people here are speaking of the fact that it doesn't show up in the print edition, but it's not totally true either. And as someone who often uses kentucky.com to search for scores and stats, I can tell you that the info on that link is incomplete, but I also understand why.

 

The point that metro newspapers only pay lip service to HS sports coverage (compared to what it used to be) still stands. All you have to do is feel the thickness of the paper, and how much less wide the paper is these days and tell that there's not as much in there as it was in the good'ol days. The H-L is at least miles better than the shell of itself that the C-J has become.

In defense of Josh and Jason Frakes and others who do that job, I understand and sympathize with them about the limitations placed upon them. There are only so many hours in the day.

Life goes on and change is inevitable. I still long for drive-in movies, sock hops, and White Castles after the game. But, if you younger guys can tolerate a slow learning dinosaur, I will continue trying to enter the e-generation. Thought BGP was a bold move, but can't figure out how to attach those cool smiley faces. No knock on Jason Frakes or Josh Moore..."tough job guys!"

I'm not much on those "cool smiley faces" (emoticons) ... of course, when you grew up with Transformers, Decepticons were so much cooler.

And I love going to the drive-in in nearby (ish?) Greensburg. Well, I guess it's nearby. It's still in the 5th Region.

LHL is on the path that most traditional newspapers are on. The move to out-of-town printing is probably the last rites before a shutdown of the printed product.

 

When you alienate your consumers they will not be consumers in the long run. LHL has long alienated most of the CKY with their bias and leanings that were contained in the front section. The sports, especially prep sports, has been what kept many people on the subscriber list. Now prep coverage is fading overall with only Josh covering. This, while there are 3 other staff members almost dedicated to UK - Mark Story, John Clay and Jen Smith. There is a daily dose of UK football by 1, 2 or at times all 3 of these staff members.

 

Mathew Graf notified readers on Saturday of the change. This probably should have been done earlier - with the special section on Friday or even earlier.

Well of course they do...where do you think their game research comes from ? BGP provides a 360 view of where a sports writer can't be at all times.
