Only Covington Catholic in the state semifinals got within single digits of them during that streak.

Agree wholeheartedly. Holmes "best" team was almost certainly 1978 (34-2 state runner up, but with two high D1 players (Beal and Schloemer)... only 2 losses were both to Shelby County), although I would put the 1980 version right there with them (33-3 state semi finals). 1980 team was more fun to watch IMO (averaged 87 ppg with a fuller "highlight" reel).

 

Actually, in a lot of ways, the 2009 team that won the state was the antithesis of the 1980 team. More size, more deliberate, tougher defensively, less scoring and, IMO, less fun to watch. But they did win it all.

 

An absolute crime that the 1978 team was deprived of a championship.

Trinity's 2012 State Championship team:

 

35-3. 2 of the losses to eventual state champions from CA and NY in the City of Palms tournament, the other loss to Madison Central after what can only be described as a bizarre ending where Trinity was called for 6 fouls in the last minute of the game and 2 in the final seconds. That team set a 3 point shooting record at Rupp in the Sweet 16 and had 5 future D1 or 2 college players and 1 D1 college football player. Also Mr. Baskeball

I would have liked to have seen Mason County at full strength against this WC team. MC played short handed and had to play a 3OT and OT game just to get to the finals. The WC size definitely hurt MC, but missing Jones was a key factor as well.

I remember when that video was posted years ago and it's still unreal to this day. I can guarantee my HS hasn't had that many dunks in their entire history of play. The dunk prior to the Mason Co. dunk is awesome. Great to see the large crowds were well treated by the Dragons.

Despite the 1993 being the only team to win the region I'd lean towards the early 70s teams of Rick Hicks and Tony Faehr.

 

IMO: Hicks and Faehr team was much better than the 1993 regional winner.

Well, this school isn't in ky but it's only 9 miles from the ky state line. these kids grew up basically in the same neighborhood . Huntington -2007-- oj mayo - nba/ pat Patterson -nba/ Chris early - oaklahoma( probably best athlete at 6'7 off the bunch.) not eligible his last year - bill walker -nba. Pretty good neighborhood 4 on 4 team.

Greenup co HS .. can be argued the 76 team with Steve Scaggs VS the 83 team led by 6'11 Mike Scott .. Mike seems to not gather much respect as his career stalled at KY , people tend to harp on what he couldnt do as opposed to what he did do .. Signed in the ACC at Wake , started the entire year at C as a freshman . How many Ky kids have even done that type of thing ? I'd say the 83 team was the best GC ever produced ( I'm biased I was a bench warmer on that team ) , had the bad luck of drawing Henry Clay in Lexington in the opening round who won it that year , then Mike closed out his career at the sweet 16 in 85 as GC drew eventual state champ Hoptown in the opening round . I believe Mike had 35 points in that game and the sweetest behind the back pass from a 6'11 guy ever

I believe it was the 1974 Greenup County team...school's first year of consolidation...that was so good. Mark Quillen 6'4 Senior center, Steve Skaggs Junior guard. They beat Fleming County, then upset Madisonville. Quillen got three fouls early, and I remember telling my boss (as we alternated games doing play-by-play,) "Well, shoot; I was hoping we would beat them full strength." Final score: Greenup 90, Madisonville 81. Lesson learned. Neither team was going to beat (eventual champion) Louisville Central in the semi-final. I think the 92-37 score is still the widest margin in state tourney in history.

 

I remember Eddie Ford telling us that Greenup's struggles vs. Hopkinsville in '85 were exacerbated by having lost a starting guard (or two?) in the region tournament. And I had forgotten that Mike Scott scored 38 points. When they could get him the ball, he was dynamite!
