1981 State Champion team at SK (McKinley, Dixon, Meier, Ponzer,etc...). 1986 team at WV (at least on modern era).with Benton, Bennett,etc...

We are still pretty new to KY but from all I have heard last years South Oldham was the most successful in their brief history. They went 29-6 avenging two loses in the Regions - Owen County and Anderson County and splitting with Oldham County. Mae it to the Elite 8 before having a terrible shooting night. I think they set records for the number of three point shots made and ended up over 75% on FT as a team. No real superstars just a good overall team that played good defense to go along with Bouvet, Bray, Young, Griffin, Fields, Snook and Williams three point shots.

Lyon County (2nd Region)

1951 the only team to win the region was the most successful in school history.

2010 lost in the region semis to eventual region champion Christian County( Anthony Hickey was a junior then). They played them to a 12 point game while Taylor Gray, a future Evansville Purple Ace played while sick. The 2010 team is the best in my life time, better then the Ty Rodgers teams in the early 2000's. This team was deep and had some under rated players. Taylor Gray was a 6'3 combo guard who was strong enough and athletic enough to play the 1-5 in high school. Timmy Perdue a 5'11 PG was as quick and athletic as anyone, and 6'5 forward Bryant Houk was the best shooter in the region. I think they finished the season 22-6 but I'm not sure.

Dad says that our 2004 Boone County team still has the best overall win percentage at 26-4. I believe that the team that might have won the region a few years ago had more wins, but also more losses.

 

2011/12 Rebels were 27-8.

I was a big fan of their '85 team.

The 1975 NewCath team was outstanding. Maybe the deepest, most talented team in their history.

The DeVoto brothers, Gary and Joe, plus Kenny Wilfong, Dave Faust and Mike Schmidt in addition to others listed above. Great team. Had an unfortunate draw at the state tourney. I thought this team had a shot at winning the 9th Region's first state title.

1975 NewCath beat Bath County in first round of state tournament. They then had to face powerful Henry Clay and lost a heartbreaker by a 72-68 score. Henry Clay went on to finish state runner-up to Darrell Griffith and Louisville Male. Right before that, Henry Clay defeated Louisville Central in the state semifinals. NewCath had a great team in 1975, lots of depth and great coaching with John Gross. Beat a fine Holy Cross team to win the 9th Region.

Lyon had a solid team when the Matchums played

Keith and Fred Matchen were solid, Keith was about 6'4 and Fred was about 6'2. I think Fred is possibly the best to ever play at Lyon, I've heard stories and seen a couple videos that was a little before my time but they were very good, if I'm not mistaken they lost to the eventual region champion 2 years in a row possibly in the finals but I don't know. Their nephew played 2 years at Lyon, Jordan Gary(2015) then played 1 year at UHA and 1 at Hopkinsville. He had a good senior year at Hopkinsville I think he averaged about 12ppg and got to play in the sweet 16.

I know the DeVotos. That was an auto correct error via my phone. I used to go watch my uncle and them play in the alumni tournament. They made it to the finals a couple of times against the Pangallo teams. Fun games

For Garrard County, they've won 20 games in a season three times (1982, 1989, 2009) and never more. They've been to the regional semifinals five times (1970, 1971, 1977, 1979, 1982) but never beyond. The 1982 team was probably the best team, losing to eventual state champion Laurel County by 7 in the regional semifinals.

 

Prior to consolidation, the county schools had very little success, with only Lancaster High ever winning a district championship (3 - 1942, 1945, 1957). That 1957 version of the Green Devils, the only county team to ever win a game in the region tournament and likely the best team in school history, finished 26-6 before falling to Junction City in the region semifinals.

 

As for the other county schools, the best year for Buckeye was 1964 when they went 23-5 and made their only regional tournament, falling to Pulaski County in the first round. They were coached by Dale Moore who would go on to command several good teams at the newly consolidated high school.

 

Camp Dick Robinson had only four winning seasons in 27 years of basketball. The Bobcats only made one region tournament, in 1939, when they finished 10-15 and lost to Parmleysville in the first round.

 

Paint Lick had much more success than Camp Dick, although they too only made the region once, and interestingly enough it was in 1952 when they finished the season 5-25, getting hammered by Somerset in the first round. The two best Panther squads were in 1947 (20-9) and 1959 (21-7).

 

The final school in the county consolidation was Mason High, the school for black students in Garrard County. Mason always had small numbers and struggled to field competitive teams. The best club was in 1963, when the Indians went 6-24 and beat Paint Lick before losing to Perryville in the district tournament.
