The Playoffs are a Joke

Featured Replies

Eleven games in the regionals were blowouts! Eight of them were run rule shutouts.

24-0 .... 17-0 ...in a regional game!!!

More than half the regional games across the state were won by 5 runs or more. We need more competitive games in the regionals.

These playoffs are a joke. Too many bad teams getting into regionals. Something needs to be done. It is all watered down. A team with a 1-12 record in the regionals? Come on KHSAA! Do something about this. School is out and we are just now playing the regionals? This season goes way too long. Something needs to be done!!

IMO, districts should not be allowed to have a draw. They should all seed.

More than likely, the 39th District would not have sent Augusta (1-12) to the 10th Region Tournament. Instead, Bracken County (12-18) and Mason County (15-10) would have more than likely been their representatives in the 10th Region Tournament. The other team in the 39th District is St. Patrick (2-11) who lost to Augusta by a score of 9-6 in the 39th District Tournament.

That is one game GRC. Look at all those other scores. There also was a 17-0 regional game. 28 regional games were decided by 5 runs or more.

I am not sure how you would want to shorten the season. You seemed to just rant without giving any suggestions. I can only use Texas as an example but I think they are on their regional finals (best 2 out 3) this past week with winners going to state. They have been playing best 2 out of 3 for I think the past 2 weeks. They start playing games in February but can because if the weather. The only way you shorten the season or have it end sooner is start playing games sooner which is almost impossible due to weather or take top 2 seeds from each district (no tournament) and start playing regionals last week instead of this week.

I am only focusing on the 10th Region.

For those who may not follow the annual football playoff threads, this thread/rant is all about that. The arguments above get used every year about the football playoffs. The same blowout games and long season happen in other sports but for some reason people ignore it when it happens in other sports. In football it is supposedly a disaster. In other sports, those same people say so what? I just wanted to bring this to their attention.

I want some of those people who go off about the football playoffs to take notice.

Interesting take; can't say that I disagree in principle.

Although a 5-run game can often be a competitive game.

And keep in mind I am talking about regional games. What would it look like if I looked at district baseball games? After all, those district baseball games are the games that are like first and second round football playoff games.

The 1980 Regional Champion Holy Cross and the 1981 Regional Champion Highlands both won with losing records, both those years were exciting baseball, whats not to like about an underdog have a chance to win the regional. Just a thought.

Not really. You have to win nine games in a row to win a state championship in baseball (8 of 9 if district runner-up). No where near that many post season wins required to win a football championship.

There are blowouts but a win is a win and a loss is a loss regardless of run differential. I personally have nothing against blowouts as games like that can be used to teach valuable life lessons that will last longer than athletic ability. I also like the fact all teams have a post season chance to win a state championship.

In the age where everyone gets a trophy for participation I suppose some get upset about the score differential, but what does it really matter in the end. This is not a form of entertainment like professional sports and these kids are not paid so the casual fan who pays to see a competitive game and does not get one can get over it.

Sure, if the losing team gets a grand slam to cut it to 1.

For what it's worth, three of the four games today in the 5th Region tournament were 1-run games. The other was a 4-0 game.

You are a joke. I don't see you whining during football season when your Tigers are beating Emminence or Bracken County 100-0. You are a no show on baseball threads, and want to show up to post this? It is what it is. No comment on St Henry beating Ryle? Cru doesn't make playoffs in any reasonable scenario other than everyone gets one. Baseball completely different than football, any day brings an upset. Great pitcher, flat, etc. Football is not that way, but heaven forbid your boys have to play Mayfield early. You don't seem to hate that, even though baseball much more level playing field.

Apparently my intent in this thread went right over your head. Did you read post #6?
