The Playoffs are a Joke

Featured Replies

How many of the these blowout games were Big school vs Little School.... since KHSAA does not want to classify baseball LIKE ALMOST EVERY OTHER STATE... you are going to have this ....

VOR, appreciate your tongue in cheek thread; however a 5 run lead in baseball is not that unusual and very often highly competitive. Example, Greenup Co. scores 7 runs yesterday in 4th against Boyd and wins by 9-4. Those 7 runs came on one misplayed single to right, 6 walks, 2 HPs, and 2 errors. An explosion like this can happen in high school baseball anytime. Coming back 4TDs down, or 30 pts in roundball much rarer.

Baseball playoffs going to mid-June crazy and another KHSAA shank.

You are a joke. I don't see you whining during football season when your Tigers are beating Emminence or Bracken County 100-0. You are a no show on baseball threads, and want to show up to post this? It is what it is. No comment on St Henry beating Ryle? Cru doesn't make playoffs in any reasonable scenario other than everyone gets one. Baseball completely different than football, any day brings an upset. Great pitcher, flat, etc. Football is not that way, but heaven forbid your boys have to play Mayfield early. You don't seem to hate that, even though baseball much more level playing field.

You do realize St Henry was the top seed in the 34th District, right? They would've been in the playoffs by winning the regular season district championship.

The 1st round of the region playoffs in baseball are 9000 times more competitive around the state than the first round of the state football playoffs. I know VOR is trying to make a point, but the hypothesis is totally incorrect.

Three 6th Region games were one run games yesterday and the other was a two run game. Three top 10 teams in the state lost in the first round. There is plenty of competitiveness to counter the first round games that aren't.

I think a more accurate comparison might be the first round district games where there are many teams with losing records playing.

1st round regional games always have a few upsets because of good pitching.

Agreed. First round district games probably make my point and case even stronger. I just didn't have time to go back and look at all those teams and games. There were enough lopsided games in the first round regional games for me to make the point. Three rounds into the baseball playoffs you have 11 run rule games and 8 of them were shutouts.

The point of all this is don't get your shorts in a bunch when there are lopsided football playoff games. It happens in every sport. If you want to change rules for football playoffs, then change them in every sport.

I completely agree. And it does happen in every sport. It's not just football and as you point out, baseball.

I really meant to do this same type of thread with the basketball playoffs but that got by me before I remembered I wanted to do it. I probably could make an even better case along these lines in basketball.

Would CCH's loss to Highlands 7-0 be one of those games that shouldn't have happened. So with your 5 run or worse basis, CCH is a bad team. I think not. I agree with the 24-0 scores and what not, but that's just because of the quality of baseball in certain areas. Just like football. The usual suspects are just better than other teams and areas.

I love all the regional games being played on Memorial Day. All districts should be seeded. KHSAA should play state right after region week. Play it all in 1 week like they did. The 2 weekend crap is for the birds.

There are very few comparisons between a deeply flawed football playoff system and the baseball playoff system. For starters, football has six classes, while baseball has but one. That puts Silver Grove (enrollment appox. 40) in same district with Campbell County (enrollment approx. 1,500). You might see a blow out or two with this arrangement. Baseball with district play is also effectively a double elimination tourney with district losers getting to match up with a regional winner. Think we might have even worse football blowouts if we matched every team that lost in a first or second round football game with a team that won in the same round. I won't argue that baseball is perfect, but the football playoff system in KY is big joke. VOR you can keeping comparing apples and oranges, but it won't make the annual stench of the football playoffs smell any better.

Please resume being the voice of reason rather than the voice of an awful football playoff system.

Apparently my intent in this thread went right over your head. Did you read post #6?

PTI but I thought this was a baseball thread about strategy.

I really think the KHSAA should make all the districts have the same format. Augusta hadn't won a game all year until districts and really had no business being there. I watched them play a regular season game, they had no business playing in a regional tournament. It is also not fair to teams like Mason and Bracken, who while they obviously are not the best teams, certainly deserved to be in the regional over Augusta or St. Patrick. Blind draw districts could really turn to disaster. Look at the 35th district for example, Cov Cath and Beechwood could draw each other and have to play in the play-in game, then Latin and Holmes could draw each other, and then the winner of that heads to region. Luckily, that's a seeded district.
