The Playoffs are a Joke

Featured Replies

Not really. You have to win nine games in a row to win a state championship in baseball (8 of 9 if district runner-up). No where near that many post season wins required to win a football championship.

There are blowouts but a win is a win and a loss is a loss regardless of run differential. I personally have nothing against blowouts as games like that can be used to teach valuable life lessons that will last longer than athletic ability. I also like the fact all teams have a post season chance to win a state championship.

In the age where everyone gets a trophy for participation I suppose some get upset about the score differential, but what does it really matter in the end. This is not a form of entertainment like professional sports and these kids are not paid so the casual fan who pays to see a competitive game and does not get one can get over it.

No, it takes 7 in a row to win state. If you lose district championship game you still advance

I think you are mistaken. Yes Augusta shouldn't have been in the tournament. But it is what it is. There were plenty of amazing games around the state, Harrison and Montgomery, Scott and Mason were two incredible games, i don't know which games you were watching, but the baseball system is not flawed.

His point is you have to win the first round of districts (in most cases) to qualify for the regional. From region through state, yes it's 7 games in a row to win it. But it's either 8 of 9 (if you are district runner-up) or 9 straight (if you are district champ) from districts through state.

Eleven games in the regionals were blowouts! Eight of them were run rule shutouts.

24-0 .... 17-0 ...in a regional game!!!

More than half the regional games across the state were won by 5 runs or more. We need more competitive games in the regionals.

These playoffs are a joke. Too many bad teams getting into regionals. Something needs to be done. It is all watered down. A team with a 1-12 record in the regionals? Come on KHSAA! Do something about this. School is out and we are just now playing the regionals? This season goes way too long. Something needs to be done!!

I don't disagree. District runners-up should not advance to regionals. And this goes for all sports that allow the last loser in district tournaments to advance to regionals

Agreed. First round district games probably make my point and case even stronger. I just didn't have time to go back and look at all those teams and games. There were enough lopsided games in the first round regional games for me to make the point. Three rounds into the baseball playoffs you have 11 run rule games and 8 of them were shutouts.

The point of all this is don't get your shorts in a bunch when there are lopsided football playoff games. It happens in every sport. If you want to change rules for football playoffs, then change them in every sport.

So does this mean the NCAA is doing it wrong in basketball?

This is a kids game, and that's who it should be about. Sure you're going to see extreme circumstances like the 24-0 game, but more kids will get to play games this way. Why would you want to shorten a kids baseball career?

Yes this is a kid's game but we are not talking about the freshman or JV level where you are developing kids we are talking about the varsity level where everyone doesn't get a trophy. What is the point of playing regular season if those games do not matter? I still do not get it where a runner-up should play in the regional tournament but that is my personal opinion. To me take your district champs, draw the pill for your game and go. As a player losing by 24 (never happened to me) would not be something I would want to do and I can say being a district runner-up (regarding Augusta) and then knowing I have to play one of the 4 winners no thank you. This is not league ball, no other sport, recreational, college or professional from my knowledge makes the regular season not count except the KHSAA for 2 or 3 districts. It is ridiculous.

I don't have an issue with the playoffs as all teams are in one tourney just like basketball. The only thing I might change is every team having to be seeded for districts.

I haven't paid attention to the All A lately, with being about what? Also half of the teams in the state? Other than possible seeding for everyone I don't see how or why anything should change.

How many Districts use a Draw versus Seeding? Districts around here all seed based on regular season head to head match ups.

3-5 districts in the state I believe use the draw. All the rest seed.

So in reality it's not that big of a deal since nearly every district seeds based off of season results.

We happen to be in a district that draws so yeah its a big deal when your 1-2 seeds have to play each other in round 1 so your best two teams in your district don't get a chance at region. :idunno:

Agreed, no reason to have playoffs of any kind.

Blame your coach or AD they are the ones along with the other schools to change it.

I can see no compelling reason for other schools not to go along unless they are hoping blind draw gives them a shot at getting to the regional they wouldn't normally have.
