Newport Central Catholic 48 Trinity 33 (Sweet 16 1st Round)

Featured Replies

T missed 20 shots in a row from mid-1st qtr to mid-3rd qtr.

Talk about disheartening. That's about as bad of a shooting slump as you can get as a team in a game.

I might get a little flack for this, especially from my buddy LB13...but without some upsets happening and things just really going NCC's way, I'd have to say no. Now, with that said have stranger things happened? Absolutely they have, but there are definitely better teams that one would think should beat them somewhere along the way. I would be somewhere between mildly and fairly surprised if they cut down the net. However, since I have seen them play several times the past couple of years which has fostered somewhat of a rooting interest for them along with my friendship with @Lawnboy13, I'd like to see it happen for them.

I wasn't at todays game, didn't see it so not sure how much I can comment on it, but NCC is going to have to come up with more than 48 points to beat most teams. Not going to hold many to 33, or anywhere close to that most of the time when playing the better teams the state has to offer. But again, if they could pull it off I'd be happy for them. Plus LB13 would get me in the school so I could check out the trophy in their trophy case.:thumb:

Your honesty is greatly appreciated. If I rate this NewCath team with teams in the past 3 - 4 years it doesn't have the overall talent that the others had. However, what this team has (and a great deal of) over those others (IMO) is TEAM UNITY.......no one plays for himself, it's ALL about the team, and this squad plays hard (not that the others didn't). Overly talented teams don't always come out on top..........alot of times.......hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard enough.

Good game, great crowd and pep section, refs were good. Fun game! We were not in the student section , but we sat very close to them. Four seperate times a yellow shirt security guy came down and stopped our kids from jumping and refused to let them stand by the railing and in the walk way. Which was blocked and they did not allow traffic through anyway. He kept pushing our kids back into the seats. When a parent very nicely asked him what the prob was, he said that the structure was not set up for that. Looking across the gym at the all boy student section twice our size in every way, leaned over the railings, jumping etc. When he was questioned he said , "Oh I didnt notice." Hahaha they were so loud anyone with eyes saw. Now obviously it wasnt a conspiracy but did interfere alot with the student section cheering the Breds on! Go Breds! Mr Huther and Mr Detzel even tried to diplomaticly handle it.

Trinity shot about 45-46% from 3 as a team the whole season. That's why they didn't abandon the 3. Like previously stated, even in off games they'd have stretches where they'd stick 5 3's quickly in a quarter. Had about 7 guys shooting 40% or better from 3 on the season, and that's usually at at least 4 spots on the floor. They lived on the 3 and ball movement for 3's all season. died by it today.

When was the last time Trinity played, or had a chance to shoot, in a larger arena? IMO, this might have a lot to do with their poor outside shooting today.

Their ball movement was very slow though. NewCath going over screens changed up what I am sure they were used to. They seemed hesitant to take rub off the pick and go towards the foul line. It looked like they wanted to rub off the screen to get free for a 3.

Trinity missed a few open looks, but let's not forget, NewCath wasn't setting the net on fire. Moeves didn't score until the late 3rd or early 4th. Hall and Weyer played to the back of their basketball card, as they say, but the rest didn't. And they still won b/c they played sound. Once a couple more start hitting, who knows what can happen.

Trinity had no answer for Weyer. Rocks led this 11-2 at one point, then failed to score in the 2nd quarter.

I had to witness it to believe it.

I have been going to games for 50+ years and have NEVER seen a shut out in a quarter before today. And, I have seen some really rotten basketball teams.

They were able to score, unlike Trinity in today's second quarter.

Unbelievable.

Looks like Trinity lacked the size to attack the basket. Murray won't have that problem as they have Hornbuckle in the post (6'4" Duke bound as DE) and Boone (6' 6" swingman signed w Samford). English and Clark are both 6'4" or so as well.

Should be an excellent Elite 8 matchup!

NCC plays very smart and everyone knows their role. And Weyer is a stud. Very impressed with him and the team today.

To be honest LB, I've always thought of NewCath teams this way(team unity). Even in the dark ages when we were going up against them in football, basketball and baseball. (I did like pitching against them when they had the field up on the hill. The constant wind was a great ally except that short field in I believe right. Or was it left?)

Some scores to compare. Against Cordia, NewCath lost by 6, Murray lost by 17. NewCath beat Brossart in the regular season by 6, Murray beat them in the All A by 4. NewCath beat West Jessamine by 15 and Murray beat them by 16.

Should be a good game.

This is why they should wait til after the state tournament to determine Mr. Kentucky Basketball... Ben Weyer making a statement to the state that he is legit. Congrats to Trinity on a great season and good luck to NCC the rest of the way.

I love Q Goodin and Carson but I've said all year that Ben is just as good as either. He definitely deserved more love and publicity in the Mr Basketball race.

Trinity with only 2 seniors on the roster? The Trinity radio color commentator predicted the Rocks to be back in Rupp next year in the state tournament.

Probably picked them to beat NCC as well. Nothing is guaranteed come March.
