9th Region: Is this true?

Featured Replies

Years ago - maybe year 1 - they initially said there would be no broadcasting of games. CCH, for one, was told they could not do their webcast. That changed a bit. Still not sure of all of the rules.

You and I are in the 1 to 10% of the people who think the entire experience is better in a high school gym. Can't wait to get to Henry County on Wednesday for the DH.

Kids do like playing at NKU. However, my guess is those girls who played last night in front of maybe 1,000 people would have LOVED it had that game been in a high school gym. 1,000 or 2,000 fans at NKU makes it seem like a scrimmage.

It's a bad atmosphere until you get to maybe the semis and the finals. Yes, it's cool to get 6,000 in for a championship game. I get that.

That's now why 9th region schools are doing it. They're doing it because they GET PAID. Who doesn't get that? Doesn't mean it's better. Just means it makes sense.

Again, I fully realize why I'm in the minority here so no need to rehash (even though I re-hashed all of my arguments).

Not in the minority as far as I'm concerned.

Sounds like Wisconsin rules.

As with most things in life.......there are good points and bad points....

Good:

Very comfortable seats

Perfect sight lines

Bathrooms upon bathrooms that are clean

Designated fan sections for each team

Varied concession stands

Clear PA system

Video / TV Screen

Plenty of seats

No lining up an hour before game to get in

Suites (if you know someone)

Two games for each session (other than final)

Bad:

Expensive concessions

It is college floor

Maybe too many seats for some games

Pay to park (unless you know the back way)

More traffic

Lots of lights and lines on the floor

Playing on odd days (Sundays)

BB&T is a very unwelcoming and unaccommodating place to play. This is universally accepted as true. I know folks in athletics at NKU and even they are poorly treated by the independent company that runs the arena. They do not allow signs or flags or enthusiasm. As for money, I don't know what the high schools make, but it can't be much more than they would by hosting locally and splitting profits. I imagine a good home game brings in $2,000-3,000 in gate, maybe another $500-1,000 in concessions. These teams do not get much more than that playing at the former Bank. Here's why...

BB&T does make money from this tournament. They do not make money from any other sporting event all year. No NKU game has ever turned a profit. So they rely on this tournament to at least make some money.

But I have never heard anyone (from NKU or high schools) say something nice about their experience playing at BB&T. Kids probably do love it, but something is clearly wrong with the way these folks run their arena and the reason why games are played there.

9th region is guaranteed $65,000 for the tourney and it will be more than that.

When you say "9th region," you mean the teams? All teams or just those playing in the tournament? If you're saying the teams share this amount, I would need to see some sort of proof. Otherwise, I'm calling shenanigans.

I thought all teams participated but it looks like just the girls and boys teams that participate share the guarantee.

I would prefer to play in a packed high school gym but the 9th doesn't have any large enough. I m guessing if you took the largest arena from each region, the 9th would be the smallest.

There are 30 shares based on how far teams (Boys and Girls) advance. It is all on the KHSAA site. 2013 the schools got $70,000.

For example, Holmes got 5 shares and $11,666.50. Dixie got 2 and $4666.60

I found the 2014 report.

Boys revenue was $107k. Girls revenue was $24k.

The schools that make out the best are the schools that have their girls team go to the finals. Even though the total girls revenue was only $24k of the $132K the girls teams get the same share. NDA, for example, got a check for $7,200(30% of the total girls revenue).

By comparison CCH got $9600 or about 7% of the total boys revenue.

You really make out if both of your teams advance to the later rounds. NCC pocketed $14k.

The $65k guarantee is combined for boys and girls.

In the past the non-participating schools each got $1000. Do not know if that is still in place.

In 2011 NCC got $13,183.31 for Boys getting to Final and Girls winning Final.

In the past the non-participating schools each got $1000. Do not know if that is still in place.

It doesn't look like non-participating get any money.

Is it true less than 500 fans showed up tonight for the 9th Region girls in that arena?

The three items bolded above should convince the money-hungry principals and athletics directors to consider moving games back to the high schools. The finances mentioned in this thread are not earth shattering if all schools share $65,000. If the attendance tonight as estimated was 500, why do they not play the girls at a high school where there is some atmosphere? I don't get this.

Is it true less than 500 fans showed up tonight for the 9th Region girls in that arena?

Well considering last year the Girls attendance in first round was 727 and 698 and no ND, NCC, Boone Co. this year then that would likely be the case.
