9th Region: Is this true?

Featured Replies

The three items bolded above should convince the money-hungry principals and athletics directors to consider moving games back to the high schools. The finances mentioned in this thread are not earth shattering if all schools share $65,000. If the attendance tonight as estimated was 500, why do they not play the girls at a high school where there is some atmosphere? I don't get this.

Title IX could be in play there.

Well considering last year the Girls attendance in first round was 727 and 698 and no ND, NCC, Boone Co. this year then that would likely be the case.

Very sad to make those girls play in a 10,000 seat arena in that case. Some principals and athletics directors are not doing a very good job of using common sense and doing what's right for the girls involved.

No, UK's women play at Memorial unless seating is needed in Rupp. I know for a fact Title IX would not play a role in the site. It sounds like a contract with the arena is making this call for the girls to play in from of almost 10,000 empty seats. That is absurd if they know it going in as you pointed out from last year's first round.

Boys play on Sunday afternoons and it is highly attended especially when you get a NCC vs CovCath matchup.

Paying to park is $5 which would be free at a high school ..............if you get there early enough to get in.

9700 seat arena is not great for some games that less than 1000. Can't argue that.

Why do the boys play on Sundays? Do they play Sunday night?

Well Girls Sweet 16 will be in BB&T vs Boys in Rupp but that is somewhat equitable as opposed to a high school gym vs a College Arena.

I would speculate that Girls teams might enjoy playing in BB&T with 750 in a 9700 seat arena more so than 750 in a 1500 seat high school gym but we will not ever know that to be fact.

Afternoon.

1:00 is first game this year.

Sunday afternoon two semi-final Boys games. Girls play Sunday night.

Thank goodness we have Henry County High School down here in the 8th Region, so none of that is an issue. I had heard the 9th Region had issues with its tournament, but I had no idea how much!

Brutal for those who attend church services on Sunday that let out at noon. No Saturday night games?

Well I can remember finding a parking spot then standing in the rain at Conner at 5:00 or 5:30pm on a Saturday night hoping to get into the gym for a 7 pm final. Then sweating in a swished seat not daring to move the entire game. While others never got in. Problems are all relative.

Sounds like Holmes and Conner need to host. Cooper was not around when I was a 9th Region guy 43 years ago, so I am not sure how big their gym is. But I know Holmes and Conner are big enough for a great atmosphere with a packed gym. I feel badly for the players today who are playing in front of thousands of empty seats up there.

I'm thinking of the kids and coaches, not the fans. Those girls tonight who played in front of 500 people in a 10,000 seat place probably could care less about people who stood in line. I was just thinking about them as much as anything.
