Lawrence County has been to the Sweet 16 before but apart of the 16th region. Both West Carter and Lewis County have an outside shot to win the 16th this year.

 

Lawrence County has not been to the state tournament as part of the 16th region or 15th Region nor has their previous school Louisa.

A little surprised to see Erlanger Lloyd on the list from the ninth region, I know Coach Code had some nice teams in the 70s, I do remember them as runner up one year to Holmes. Cooper will make it off the list very soon I would think.

I know in the 14th that most of the control and power has always been in the southern part of the region in a triangle from Hazard to Hindman to Whitesburg. This dates back to the 1940s. It's no surprise when the 14th region championships are researched that most of the titles are from Perry or Knott County schools. The only other school to have several titles is Breathitt County, but for most of its history Breathitt was in the same district as the Knott schools, which in year's past were old Knott County High, Carr Creek, Hindman, and Cordia and was also part of the establishment.

 

I may be paranoid but I think most of the region's have a inner circle power structure that makes it difficult for schools outside the circle to get to the Sweet 16. It may not be that way in regions such as the 6th, 7th, or 11th, but I believe it is prevalent in the rest of the state.

So are you saying that in the Lexington metro area of the 11th region, the private schools have a power stranglehold? That Sayre (who’s never won the region), LexCath and Lex Christian (who’s never even been to the regional tournament) are preventing Dunbar, Henry Clay, Scott County, Lafayette and Madison Central with at least 15 state championships among them from having success? Isn’t Scott County close to the winningest program in the state the last 15 years or so, and Scott Co and Madison Central both with pretty recent championships? And Dunbar and Henry Clay challenging right now? Wha……?

Sorry Professor, not following you here. Can you explain? Are you saying some "establishment" (what does that mean?) in the 14th region has, over the years, prevented better teams from advancing out of the region? If so, then how was this accomplished?

What I'm referring to is in our region most of the controlling powers, such as assigning secretaries, influence, political leverage, and money has always been in the southern districts in our region. It's not as bad as it once was but those schools for many years had built in advantages. I suppose what I'm inferring is this is my opinion of how it was from the '40s to the '80s. The past decade or two have been better.

Being able to be the host is a nice advantage, too. Hazard Memorial was the lone host from about 1950-1965, when Breathitt opened their Coluseum. Then Knott's 3 schools consolidated in 1975 and they built their 5000 seat gym. Those 3 venues were the only host (with the exception of one year in 1985 that Leslie County hosted) until the late 1990s when Powell County was finally added to the rotation. I don't know how much advantage being the host is but I would have to think that if there's 3 or 4 fairly evenly matched teams in a region that being able to play on your own floor, shoot on rims that you're familiar with, and not have to load on a bus and travel for 90 minutes, would be a big plus.

Our region actually does a pretty good job these days, but I have my opinions of past years.

 

As I said, maybe I'm just paronoid. I know of several teams that I felt should have won the region over the years and in my view a few suspicious things happened that didn't allow it to occur. There have been better teams from our region than the ones that ended up playing in certain given years, and most of the ones that ended up playing were the usual teams.
