Minn public elem school does away with all holidays and other days

Featured Replies

This is America, therefore we celebrate American holidays. Go to a foreign country for schooling and see if they celebrate any holidays other than their own! Ask them to recognize one of our holidays and see what kind of response you get! But here in America or politicians and gov and school leaders would rather cater to the minority than the majority! So you take our holidays out of the classroom because a few don't celebrate them.... But they will still celebrate their own at home or wherever. If you don't want to be a part of American heritage, then why did you come here?

#99, the "they wouldn't do it either" argument is not well-conceived.

America history is an easy one. It is to be taught. Not sure why we are debating that. The issue to me is irrelevant holidays.

Well, I'm sure the new wave of Americans will soon be offended by this holiday and others.

So? What would your argument be for celebrating "traditional" holidays but not those holidays celebrated by the "other" tax-paying families?

If I'm understanding your question correctly id have to say you answered it yourself. "Traditional" why should we celebrate their holidays? And no I don't believe in celebrating and partying for cinco de mayo!

Not an argument. A fact

I appreciate your candor. It reinforces my beliefs that a)this is really what it's about and b)why we shouldn't celebrate ANY non-US history days in public school.

Sure it's a fact but it should never be justification for our actions.

Would you say "We should kill Muslims in our country because they kill Christians in their's?"

No not at all. And I'm not saying the reason we should not celebrate their holidays is because they don't celebrate ours. We both said it: we have our traditions here. They have theirs where they are from. Let's keep it that way.

Pretty soon the only holiday that will make sense in this country is April 1st

Well done. :lol2::thumb:

Two quick questions...and I'm going to use Thanksgiving and Christmas as the examples.

How does having school on those days affect the school's ability to attract teachers? And what happens if you have a majority of teachers "call off" for those days?

And, do you (as a school district) expect to see an overwhelming majority of students on those days? Because wouldn't you be killing yourself in funding if you have several days where only 20-25% of students actually show up?

I would think there is a difference between celebrating the holiday in school vs. being off school for a holiday. No school for Winter Break but no party in the school on Dec. 18th.

Every Holiday celebrated has a History behind it in America.

Minnesota is an interesting state. Upper Midwest with many traditional values and a conservative culture, but an incredibly liberal state.

I think a lot of it stems from the weird coalition that makes up the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. That place more than most still has a lot of its labor roots in tact and it turned a lot of folks toward progressivism that never went there in a lot of other states. That Northern populism is still pretty strong there like it is in Wisconsin and some of the other states in the region.

I'd imagine there is something to the notion that like its regional neighbor, Illinois, the state is dominated by the massive population in the greater Twin Cities area, where darn near half the state's population lives.

Are you denying it is the truth?

Sure it's a fact but it should never be justification for our actions.

And that is my point, the values and beliefs that are being removed are what makes our country strong. Values and beliefs are not a religious thing, "life liberty and the pursuit of of happiness". Freedom of speech. The right to bear arms, do you think the illegal immigrant assault upon our country would be different if we didn't have the second Amendment? The illegals who have slipped into our country, for nefarious reasons and not for safety, will think twice before starting trouble because they have no clue about how many Americans have weapons in their homes. Do you know that in Switzerland, a neutral country by definition in every conflict, has a law that every household have weapons and are required by the Swiss government to be educated in their use? That is a fact, look it up. This is a smoke screen, it is not about cutting turkeys from construction paper. It's just another case of attacking the fabric of our country. You have to stand for something or you stand for nothing at all. Each freedom, in this case to celebrate anyone's holidays, we give up weakens our country.
