NKU charges an exhorbitant facility usage/management fee that makes the 9th Region much less profitable for the participating schools. If you go to the KHSAA website you can review the regional financials for all 16 regions. 10th is annually one of top performers in state, while 9th lags way behind. Memory tells me it was over $2,000 less payout per participant. Thats a lot to give up on top of the extra travel distance.

 

Would love to see the Ninth region go back to Holmes and Conner for the regional. Your points are exactly right!

As accurately pointed out by GRC Reporter - The last 10th Region Tournament conducted at Montgomery County High School was 2012, not 2013 as I stated in my commentary.

I really think that it can hurt you having it in a high school gym and then playing it on a college floor at Rupp. I know it has not hurt Mason when they have won it but the other regions outside the 8th and 10th I think have it on college floors. Lex Cath for example plays at home on a college floor, and seem to fair well in the regional tourney from it. I think it is an advantage for sure. What has helped Mason over the years it the field house is like a college gym with its back drop and size.

The years Mason County wins the 10th region, it's because they have had the best team, or at least playing best at that time, not because of it being at the Fieldhouse.

 

The only reason it's an advantage for them is because many of the rest of the 10th region schools make it that way by psyching themselves out. But, as Harrison County, Augusta, Pendleton Co and GRC know, Mason Co can lose at the Fieldhouse in post-season tournament play, plus, the Royals can win it elsewhere as well, having won the 10th title while being hosted at NKU and Montgomery Co- all in the last 8 years.

Popcorn is good I agree with that, but not having it at the Fieldhouse every year. I know the 40th district will never vote for that now that we have MoCo that can host it.

 

We will put this on the list of things we will never agree on. Eithier NKY or Mt. Sterling are logistical nightmares for some teams. Especially through the week when these kids have school the next day. The Feildhouse is the absolute best option. Every year!! Attendance will be better and profits will be higher.

 

The whole home court advantage thing is overrated in my opinion. Does it help? Possibly not sure. An argument can be made I guess.

Of the 7 years compared, the Montgomery site has produced the two lowest distributions, and Mason Co. has generated the three highest by a substantial margin. NKU had an entirely different arrangement with the 10th Region than the 9th does which made for a mid-level distribution of the seven years. Travel costs are adjusted for each school prior to individual school distributions being calculated.

 

My conclusion is NKU as a site was not as financially disastrous as traveling to Mt. Sterling (pending a similar contract to the 2009 arrangement) has consistently demonstrated. The Fieldhouse is a tradition and when attempts to change have been implemented it has not served the 10th Region schools well. Whatever reasons the change to NKU (college arena environment, big floor, etc) was an understandable consideration with a lot of travel expenses. The change to Mt. Sterling just seems financially irresponsible, lots of travel expenses for most teams, and it smacks of selfishness.

Was their lower attendance due to a weather event or something else going on that brought the attendance down, or is there something else entirely to blame?

I love the annual debates on this topic,especially on the years Montgomery and the 40th hosts the tournament. With the revenue charts posted it seems like a no brainer where the tournament should be held each year. However I have gone and will continue to go to the 10th Regional Tournament wherever it is held.

Curious as to what the back story is on 2013 and why it came in so much lower than normal at Mason County compared to what they normally bring in? 2 main reasons I remember are no Mason County and Montgomery County was a strong favorite.

This is my take on it. The years of 2010 GRC and Mason Co was in the finals and bought huge crowds. Also during the other games you great attendance. 2011 GRC and Pendleton Co was in the finals and both bought big crowds. The game between Pendleton and Mason when Pendleton beat them also was packed. Those years you had some really good teams that could make some noise at the state tourney. 2012 When it was at MoCo and GRC defeated Mason Co. GRC had a great crowd but the Mason fans did not travel as well that year. 2013 Mason Co was not in the regional tourney, in the finals you had Scott and MoCo. If you look at the teams in the regional tourney and how far some got IMO is why attendance was down.

I totally agree. Being a small school guy I can tell you the $$$ is important to our limited budgets so I suggest that financial performance be the determining factor. It's the only objective way to determine it's success. Sorry to my friends both North and South but the numbers speak for themselves.

Your argument is with the KHSAA and the arranging of the regions. You can't blame the 40th district for being an outlier in terms of geography. When it is our turn to host, then it is our turn to host. No selfishness there.

 

We travel to Mason County 3 out of 4 years. Truly, that is unselfish!
