Boycotting the Oscars

Featured Replies

I am boycotting the Oscars. I am not walking the red carpet this year. Sorry to disappoint my fans...again.

That's the white people's fault. :lol2:

I dont disagree, hahaha.

But it also isnt the white actors fault about the nominations.

I just think its all dumb.

When you have voters who are predominantly old white dudes, it is absolutely some white guy's fault that there are no black nominations.

Chris Rock called the Oscars "The White BET Awards."

The board sent out a letter saying they are going to evaluate their selection process.

Look for "Fifty Shades of Black" to now be nominated next year.

Michael B Jordan could/should have received a nomination for Creed

O'Shea Jackson could/should have received a nomination for Straight out of Compton

I loved both of their performances...but if DiCaprio doesn't win for The Revenent they need to recount the votes.

I saw they were adding 300 new voters

I've been boycotting the Oscars for 38 years.

I quit trying to understand the Oscars and their voting years ago.

African Americans make up approximately 12% of the US population (even though the Oscars go beyond American borders, that is the bulk of films evaluated), whites about 64%. The largest minority group is Latinos at over 16%, and rising. Numbers would show there should be a low number of African Americans nominated for awards.

However, I think the bigger gripe, and what Spike Lee was getting to, has to do with the structure of the Hollywood system. This is an institutional problem, kind of like ownership in professional sports. There are no minorities in power positions and attaining power is difficult. There are prominent minority actors that get their due, regardless if they are nominated for Oscars. Simply nominating or handing over awards to (un)deserving candidates is masking the larger problem. I hope people - especially those on the boycott bandwagon - can see that. This is where messages get lost.

Both were great performances. Jordan gets a nod from me.

Let's take a different approach. We have the same issue here on BGP every year with every All Star team. Someone who may have been deserving is left off. So if you want to add someone, then you have to remove someone.

Who was nominated? Since Will Smith and Michael B Jordan were two who were mentioned, let's focus on that category. (disclaimer, I haven't seen any of the movies or performances under consideration, so I can't comment)

Which black actor/actress were "deserving"? Already identified above

Now who do you remove from the nominated list to promote them?

Were the non-nominated really deserving of the nomination?

Is it really a racial issue or were there just better performances by those who were nominated?

As I said, this is the problem with trying to address the issue by simply nominating actors/actresses. That is lip service.

By all means, boycott. I am too.

How are white people that go see Will Smith movies affected by him not attending the Oscars?

It's whatever man. Will Smith was pretty good in concussion. The others may have been more deserving I dunno.
