President's plan to tighten gun laws= rematch with gun lobby

Featured Replies

Is this the supposed new proposal? I dont get it. I am missing something.

I think so. Reading last night that this is about all that can be done by Executive Order...I fell into the trap of not realizing what could and couldn't be done with an EO. With all of the rhetoric coming out of the White House, it seemed like they were prepared for some over reach...but in the end knew they couldn't.

The President is going to accomplish more today than anything Congress has done in the past 15 years.

-- Background checks for guns bought from dealers online and at gun shows.

-- FBI to hire more than 230 additional examiners and other staff to process background checks 24 hours a day.

-- Funding for 200 new Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents and investigators to help enforce gun laws.

- A new $500 million investment to increase access to mental health care.

-- ATF is finalizing a rule to ensure that dealers who ship firearms notify law enforcement if their guns are lost or stolen in transit.

-- Gun safety technology.

Licensed dealers already must do the bolded.

Individuals who sell at gun shows who are not licensed dealers do not.

Again I'll wait to read the release.

Any information on what this is? Seems pretty vague.

Where is the $500 million coming from? Is he asking congress to print more money or does part of his plan call for where he is cutting spending?

Guns that can only be fired by their owner using finger print or electronic tech to disable them.

^Not sure if this is sarcasm or if the current administration actually believes that this is a legitimate measure to reduce gun violence.

-- Background checks for guns bought from dealers online and at gun shows. If you are buying from a dealer they are already performing background checks, nothing new there

-- FBI to hire more than 230 additional examiners and other staff to process background checks 24 hours a day. This will speed up the process for those purchasing firearms, that's all this does. There will be less delays.

-- Funding for 200 new Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents and investigators to help enforce gun laws. Need to let the ones out there already enforce current gun laws, 200 more agents not enforcing the current gun laws doesn't help anything...this is a pure PR move

- A new $500 million investment to increase access to mental health care. IF, this is to open mental health records up to the background check process...then we have a winner!!! But I read else where this was just to study mental health issues as related to gun violence and will not be used in the background check process.

-- ATF is finalizing a rule to ensure that dealers who ship firearms notify law enforcement if their guns are lost or stolen in transit. Didn't know it was optional to not report missing Firearms :lol2: Dealing with Firearms, Records and the ATF for years...not telling the ATF you have a missing Firearm isn't an option. You can have license revoked or suspended on the spot if an ATF investigator finds that you have a firearm missing without documentation. This again is much to do about nothing, unless there is more to it.

-- Gun safety technology. Finger Print Technology?

It will make liberals feel more protected, we have to do something, we certainly can't convince them to protect themselves. Been there, tried that.

Lol, if we're trying to comfort the liberals, lets just put a sticker on the side of each gun that says, "This gun may not be used to do bad things." They think the signs in front of schools keep shooters out, why wouldn't a sign on the side of a gun work too? :idunno:

Or maybe this...RachelSimpsonAK051.jpg

So my question is, when these executive orders that Obama and everyone else is making such a huge deal about fail, what excuse will the administration have? What will be the next step in their plan? Surely, these new policies aren't the end game in reducing gun violence.

It actually is quite predictable that he is making a huge deal about his executive orders. Its a PR stunt for the immediate future. The results likely wont be felt until is is long removed from office, so he really has nothing to lose. When the results do come back in a few years, and if they show that despite his executive orders gun violence remained the same, he will blame it on the acting administration. Typical.

I would be shocked if at least some private party sales wouldn't also include background checks.
