I didn't get to read the whole thing but Bill O'Reilly said that the NRA needs to "be reasonable universal background checks".

So my question is, when these executive orders that Obama and everyone else is making such a huge deal about fail, what excuse will the administration have? What will be the next step in their plan? Surely, these new policies aren't the end game in reducing gun violence.

 

It actually is quite predictable that he is making a huge deal about his executive orders. Its a PR stunt for the immediate future. The results likely wont be felt until is is long removed from office, so he really has nothing to lose. When the results do come back in a few years, and if they show that despite his executive orders gun violence remained the same, he will blame it on the acting administration. Typical.

1. I'd require background checks for all gun purchases.

 

2. I'd require some sort of mental health evaluations to purchase a firearm. The cost of this would be a major hurdle, that as of right now I have no answer for, but if I'm Czar, I'm repealing the ACA as well, so we got some money to play with right? :lol2:

 

3. I'd prohibit anyone convicted of a crime (as an adult) from owning a weapon.

 

4. I'd prohibit anyone who is currently taking or in the recent past been on an anti-depressant or other mood-altering medications. What's recent past? I'm not sure what a good amount of time is, but I think it's worth figuring out.

 

5. I would not ban any types of guns.

 

 

Now time to sit back and listen to people tell me how dumb these are....

I like these...#1 is problematic in that I don't know how to accomplish this if I'm selling a gun to a neighbor or if someone is passing one on to a family member.

#2 is a step in the right direction...but would think a mental health check on every person wouldn't be workable. I'd settle with #4 in place of #3

But I have heard many from both sides argue that some form of mental health record needs to be part of a national database when considering the purchase of firearms. And it is my understanding that said database is chock full of holes.

I don't disagree on records for mental health. I just don't think you could force someone to have an evaluation if they have no past history.

So if people are taking an SSRI for anxiety or to help with sleep, eating disorder, pain or OCD, no guns allowed, that right is gone?

#3 would be an issue with me, all crimes? Speeding and running a stop sign is a crime. I would want it to be spelled out in great detail on what crimes.

 

#4 I would have an issue with as well. A great number of people get depressed at times and take meds, some take them for a short time, the vast majority wouldn't think of doing harm.

 

Two weeks ago I had shoulder surgery and had to take percicet, would I have to give up all of my weapons because I was on a powerful pain medication? I simply unloaded the guns and wouldn't even think of using them under the influence of anything. And as John mentioned above about anxiety meds and all, the majority of people on those meds would be fine.

 

I could agree with both if they are very specific and root out possible trouble and not the average citizen.
