President's plan to tighten gun laws= rematch with gun lobby

Featured Replies

I'm fine with the background checks. The part that irks me is the unnecessary spending that will come in the form of tax. And it wont be a tax on everyone, it will likely be a tax on gun and firearm sales.

If I have to pay for some bums healthcare, why shouldn't a non-gun owner have to pay gun taxes.

I'd really like to know exactly what "gun safety technology" is. If @Jumper_Dad is correct, that's an absurd idea, IMO. In fact, it may be the most stupid "gun control" idea I've ever heard of.

It is possible that this is a back door around the FOPA law.

The 1986 FOPA prohibited a federal database that tied specific guns to specific owners.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearm_Owners_Protection_Act

From above:

No such rule or regulation prescribed [by the Attorney General] after the date of the enactment of the Firearms Owners Protection Act may require that records required to be maintained under this chapter or any portion of the contents of such records, be recorded at or transferred to a facility owned, managed, or controlled by the United States or any State or any political subdivision thereof, nor that any system of registration of firearms, firearms owners, or firearms transactions or disposition be established. Nothing in this section expands or restricts the Secretary's authority to inquire into the disposition of any firearm in the course of a criminal investigation.

Requiring federal background checks on ALL sales would, by default, create a database of specific owners and specific guns.

Those driving the over-arching agenda are not dumb or ignorant. Unversal, all-sales background checks would create a national gun registration database over time.

This will re-energize the gun lobby and ensure that the House and Senate majorities are increased for Republicans. The NRA membership and renewals will hit all time highs within a month. Pro 2nd Amendment Super PACS will be everywhere this campaign cycle. Ammo and gun and safe sales will skyrocket. Private, hand to hand, in State sales will also skyrocket.

Where is the $500 million coming from? Is he asking congress to print more money or does part of his plan call for where he is cutting spending?

I'll take door #1, print more money.

I'll take door #1, print more money.

The power of the purse still is supposedly with Congress. Of course they continue to manage via Omnibus continuing resolutions instead of an actual budge process. They just passed the latest Omnibus and that carries things through September. At that point they will debate and bluster over the next resolution to score political points before the election. Then they will likely claim victory and pass another, short term, spending resolution. In theory, if something was not in the recent Omnibus its not funded - till at least September.

Of course the Government does not print the money. The (private) Fed does. And they do. But the Government has to sell bonds to get the printed money. For now, it is the Fed that buys most of the bonds. Oh....and with the recent prime rate increase and projected increases in 2016 the cost of government borrowing will go up (and up). The (private) Fed will make more money on interest loaning it out to its best customer - the federal government.

The following is from the above link. I rest my case.

“Guns are my life,” said Logan Helms, 27, of Boyd County. “I’d almost give up my vehicle and my other toys just to keep my guns.”

A while back, somebody here posed the question "What if the elimination of guns would completely eliminate gun violence - would you be in favor?"

A few wouldn't even consider answering. Said that the scenario was impossible. But that's the point of a hypothetical - it's hypothetical.

Apparently, the thought of being without guns was too horrible to even contemplate. Even if the result was Edenic. Too great a price to pay.

The KKK was the original Gun Control organization in America.

Something to think about.

Your right, he probably figures why would he need a car if he can use his guns to carjack someone.

You probably don't see my sarcasm there since you missed the part where he said "almost" which is a key word in his quote.

Background checks for guns bought from dealers online and at gun shows. If you are buying from a dealer they are already performing background checks, nothing new there

Who's a dealer is the issue! I would prefer all gun sales but this is a start.

-- FBI to hire more than 230 additional examiners and other staff to process background checks 24 hours a day. This will speed up the process for those purchasing firearms, that's all this does. There will be less delays.

Dylan Roof slid through the cracks maybe he doesn't with more help.

-- Funding for 200 new Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents and investigators to help enforce gun laws. Need to let the ones out there already enforce current gun laws, 200 more agents not enforcing the current gun laws doesn't help anything...this is a pure PR move

Often in any organization workers do not do all of their job because they are overworked. More agents may ease the strain.

- A new $500 million investment to increase access to mental health care. IF, this is to open mental health records up to the background check process...then we have a winner!!! But I read else where this was just to study mental health issues as related to gun violence and will not be used in the background check process.

very interested to see where this one ends up. More so because this is where pro gun differs within its own ranks.

-- ATF is finalizing a rule to ensure that dealers who ship firearms notify law enforcement if their guns are lost or stolen in transit. Didn't know it was optional to not report missing Firearms :lol2: Dealing with Firearms, Records and the ATF for years...not telling the ATF you have a missing Firearm isn't an option. You can have license revoked or suspended on the spot if an ATF investigator finds that you have a firearm missing without documentation. This again is much to do about nothing, unless there is more to it.

Good. No loophole.

-- Gun safety technology. Finger Print Technology?

Got a lot of dumb users need smarter guns.

Similar to the result I would expect from your side if it were asked to give up abortion.

What would be the result?

No more abortion = no more rapes, incest, or mothers' lives in dangers. If so strike the word and practice this second!!!
