Proposed 6 Class alignment (from KHSAA)

Featured Replies

Good point, don't know if I had seen that one. But there seems to be an out clause "If and where possible". I guess that's why they can have 6 teams in the mountain Class A district (which we all know is only until Evarts and Cumberland close). Guess we have to wait and see who requests. But do you think it is set in stone that the limit will hard and fast stay at 5? Look at Harlan Central. Right now, they (if they opened tomorrow) would probably be in 6A. But if they did happen to hit 5A level, there is only one logical district, and that would increase it to 6. I know it is easy for me to sit behind my keyboard and say "make all the districts the same size", but in the end, schools aren't always built right next to each other exactly the same size, and surely, they wouldn't pull out Grant (or another school in the Harlan County example) and just move them somewhere in outer egypt just to stay within a five limit? Or would they?

For the first few years, no 5 will be the limit, but as more teams start to compete, and they will, I know of a few that will start in the next few years. Plus add the NC schools who will undoubtedly reconsider that thought now, I would says 2011 we will start seeing 6 team districts possibly.

If you are thinking like KHSAA staff or others, you should be scared. You never what will be posted about you now........

Unlike them, I don't really care.:D and they already say plenty.

It's no wonder that some supporters of schools like Cov Cath, Beechwood, Highlands, Trinity, St. X and others would not like this change. They haven't necessarily seen life from the other side of the fence.
Because we earned the right not to be on that side of the fence. But I guess the old adage comes in to play, "If you can't beat 'em, split 'em."

I see the groundwork being laid for a tremendous improvement in OVERALL football in the state for years to come, not necessarily the continued improvement of select teams. That is what parity and balance is all about.
Ah, good ol' Marxist theory.

What the KHSAA has done is water down the state championship to the point that it won't mean as much now. How can you be a "state champion" when you beat out only 30 - 40 other schools? This is the equivalent of a regional championship.

Obviously, the St. X's of the state shouldn't be playing against the schools barely large enough to field a program. But I think 4 classes plus a separate class for the private schools would be more reasonable. Public vs. private is comparing apples and organges. Two different sets of rules by which to operate by should also result in two separate playoffs.

Sorry to be nit-picky, but this comment got the wheels in the "social science" part of me working...

To work toward greater "parity" doesn't exactly imply that a "Marxist" type philosophy is being used.

Kissinger noted that one thing that would HELP those that haven't been as successful over a number of years would be the possibility of more weeks to practice in the playoffs -- as traditional powers have always had.

To be "Marxist" or "Socialist," EQUALITY OF OUTCOME FOR ALL would be the goal. The KHSAA would've had to MANDATE that all schools -- whether they'd gotten in the playoffs or not, whether they'd won in the playoffs or not -- would get to practice as many weeks as those who'd earned the right by continuing to win playoff games.

Further, a pure Marxist would probably want to outlaw the idea of a tournament at all, as there would be a "1st place" eventually. Marxism wants to eliminate competition completely and discourage people from wanting to become their best, in favor of ONLY the "whole" becoming great.

I don't think this is what's in play with the KHSAA (or the wishes of probably 80% of the coaches/administrators).

This move will probably allow more teams to compete for championships that have had very little realistic chance in the past (like, almost ALL the schools in 5A who previously had to compete for championships against schools with at least DOUBLE their boys-enrollment).

The NFL has made policies for the explicit purpose of creating more parity (better CHANCES for all to become champions). That has meant a lot more teams getting deeper in the playoffs than usual (Seattle, Carolina, etc....so it's not ALWAYS the Cowboys or the 49ers like in the past).

This does NOT mean "dynasties" cannot still exist (see the Patriots). BUT, they have to be EXTREMELY intelligent (again, see the Patriots) about how to proceed in a different environment.

As a result, the NFL has gotten better and better in terms of popularity.

In contrast, look at Major League baseball who has resisted measures to allow for parity (policies that would assist "small-market" teams against juggernauts like the Yankees).

Coincidentally, in my opinion (along with admittedly other factors), baseball has lost its status as "America's Pastime" to football.

"Parity" does not mean "equality of outcome."

Though FANS of certain schools may not like this on the surface, overall in the end, I believe this will HELP football at MANY more schools throughout the state...but importantly, it will do so WITHOUT "punishing" any of the current traditional "powers that be."

Two different sets of rules by which to operate by should also result in two separate playoffs.

Really? I need to call Coach Lampley and tell him we have a new rule book from the KHSAA. Thanks for the info!

class A district 8 (Pikevilles') has six.

My psychic powers are amazing. Already my visions are coming true.

1A has more teams then the other classes so naturally a six team district would happen there first.

The link I posted specifically says "5. If and where possible, ensure that there are a minimum of four and maximum of five teams in a district. In order to put each school in approximately the same scheduling situation, a balance of districts is desired, and is to be waived only when it was in the best interest of all teams involved due to an extreme scheduling situation or due to impending consolodation or closing of schools." Aren't a few of those six consolidating in 2008? This is a planned district for when the consolodation takes place. Look it up if you don't believe me.

I can honestly say that this comment could not be more wrong; but you're entitled to your opinion.

Being a Pikeville fan I have been on the losing side of the scoreboard a lot of times against Beechwood but their program and fans are 1st class all the way IMO.

None of the District 8 schools are consolidating any time soon, if at all.

I don't know, one of the teams should be moved to district 7. It doesn't make the best of sense to have those two districts aligned that way. When Cumberland and Evarts leave district 8 there will be four in there and still 6 in district 7.

There are several 6 team districts in 1A under the current proposal, as sandy posted, 1A has more teams so this was already expected. 1A districts #1, 2, 7 & 8 all have 6 teams under the current proposal.

I predict before too long this will spread to the other classes as well.:p I'm psychic you know. :D

It wouldn't make any sense to take a school out of Floyd or Pike counties, away from their natural rivals, and bring them two hours west to play Harlan and Pineville. It will probably stay four and six when Cumberland and Evarts close. Would you take Pikeville away from Phelps and Paintsville or Allen Central away from South Floyd and Betsy Layne? Those six belong together.

I think the practical limits of districts will have to be four and six due to geography.

Right now, Louisville looks a little gerrymandered to me- the eastern district is pretty cohesive, but then central and western districts take on exaggerated crescent shapes. If we're doing this by location, I think more cohesive and logical districts would be:

That's the word I was looking for:thumb:.

My concern is what this would do to the St X-Manual rivalry. The schools have played since since both schools had football teams. I know the Male/Manual game will continue, but schedule and circumstance could threaten our series with the Tigers.
