Under the six class system, should Beechwood move up to 2A?

Featured Replies

If the class breakdown we have now is accurate Beechwood and Mayfield would be heavy favorites every year to play in the 1A title game. For Beechwood, add to that if they stay in 1A their district games would be:

Bracken County

Bishop Brossart

Ludlow

Walton-Verona

Dayton

Bellevue

I don't know any other way to put it, that is an ugly district schedule from Beechwood's point of view. However, if you move up to 2A your district would include natural rival NCC, Newport, and Holy Cross. And, 2A would be very competitive for Beechwood making a title once every five years a realistic goal instead of winning half of all the titles.

Anyone?

Possibly. But the argument on the flip-side is that the re-alignment will allow many teams that have been, shall we say, "repressed," to blossom into solid winning programs that will challenge Beechwood and Mayfield in the future. I kind of see it like capitalism - the market has a way of correcting itself. I think the realignment will too, though it may take 4-5 years. I personally feel like Brossart will eventually become very good in football.

for our (bracken Co's) sake... i wish they would. Without them, maybe just maybe we can win enough to make a playoff appearance.

Mayfield's district would not be tough...Every year one of these teams would be solid but I'm not sure they could challenge Mayfield.

1A District 1

Mayfield

Crittendon County

Russelville

Fulton County

Fulton City (They weren't on class list under the evenly divided thread)

With Mayfield's declining enrollment I think they would stay in 1A. If they moved to 2A there district doesn't get alot tougher, but their regional and substate games do. Mayfield never looks to duck an opponent, but 1A looks to be the best fit!

2A District 1

Mayfield

Murray

Trigg Co

Ballard Memorial

Reidland

Caldwell Co

Heath

Regional/Substate possible opponents

Lexington Christian

Danville

Bardstown

Fort Campbell

I'm sure Beechwood would chose to consider factors other than just "liklihood of winning state titles" if moving to AA is an option.

For example, what type of gate would you anticipate for any of the possible district matchups with this alignment? I'm sure Bellevue will continue to field competitive teams and challenge Bwood occasionally but I can't imagine standing room crowds for any of the other games.

Beechwood needs to move up to retain their integrity as a top notch small-school program along with NewCath. Neither programs' season would be complete (in my mind at least) without playing eachother in a game that meant something state-title wise.

With only 36-37 teams in a class, 4 and 5 teams will be all thats in a district. I havent read anywhere where teams will be allowed to play up

I think their integrity will be just fine, no matter where they are. I am sure that they would like to move up, but if we go to the super class idea, then it's a mute point, because they will be in 2A. I think that is the next evolution, so enjoy 5 or 6 straight title appearances and then move up is my thought.

As a Beechwood fan I would like to see them move up, one to retain their big rivalries with Danville and NCC, and second, I do think they will need a bit more competition.

I think an immediate move to 2A is in order, however, for Beechwood.

I think some teams...including Beechwood and Mayfield would consider making the move to 2A, but that would not be able to happen for a few years as according to the proposal teams could play up in class but it would require written approval by the board and we all know how long it takes the board to give any type of permission on things...and that from what I have read (and I could be wrong) is that teams could not immediately move up...so it looks like Beechwood and Mayfield would be stuck in the watered down 1A for at least a couple of years.

If I am wrong someone on this someone please clarify this for me...thanks!!!

It seems things will be changing again in the near future (5 or 6 yrs.) so it looks like May and Bchwood are stuck in 1A until then. Dnt worry Makaveli..........I think their integrity will remain intact....as should their success.

I think most schools are going to consider geography of district opponents first and competitiveness second when deciding whether to play up. My question is, will teams playing up be locked into a four-year alignment.

1A district appears to be a cakewalk. But 2A would be lots more exciting...our rival Murray (we love beating the crap out of those guys), Trigg (since moving to 2A have really bulked up their program), Caldwell (we used to play them before our drop to 1A), and Heath (up and down program). Plus we always like meeting Dville in substate!!! So 2A sounds like much more fun.

Based on history I would guess that Beechwood would stay in 1A, durning their incredible run they could have played up just as Mayfield and Danville did but that was then and this is now. I know I use to think when Mayfield was in AA that if we were playing in 1A (where our enrollment would have placed us) that we had some teams that could have ended their run but after we joined 1A I gained more respect for how good Beechwood was espically after we ended their strangle hold on 1A in 95 by barely hainging on to a win that I thought would come easily before the game was played. That was then and this is now so I have no idea whether or not Beechwood would move up but if they do it would add another small school super power to a already packed AA. I think AA will be great with or without them but if they do it would make AA the most exciting class to watch every year for me. As for Mayfield, I dont think it makes good sense. Mayfield's enrollment is in decline and a good portion of the kids comming into the system are Mexicans that do not play football. As it stands now it is hard for Mayfield to mount championship threats every year rather we now only have truly championship calibre teams every 3rd of 4th year and I think that trend will only continue as the schools football base continues to shrink as almost every new housing development is now located outside of the schools boundaries.
