Under the six class system, should Beechwood move up to 2A?

Featured Replies

I think some teams...including Beechwood and Mayfield would consider making the move to 2A, but that would not be able to happen for a few years as according to the proposal teams could play up in class but it would require written approval by the board and we all know how long it takes the board to give any type of permission on things...and that from what I have read (and I could be wrong) is that teams could not immediately move up...so it looks like Beechwood and Mayfield would be stuck in the watered down 1A for at least a couple of years.

If I am wrong someone on this someone please clarify this for me...thanks!!!

IMO, I think Beechwood, getting a new coach, would not want to jump into 2A for a couple years anyway. Atleast with that rule, they wont feel pressure to move up.

Based on history I would guess that Beechwood would stay in 1A, durning their incredible run they could have played up just as Mayfield and Danville did but that was then and this is now.

I think you bring up a good point, but would they have been allowed to up back then? If so...you would think if they were ever going to move up, it would have been back in the 90's when they were so dominate.:thumb:

I know I use to think when Mayfield was in AA that if we were playing in 1A (where our enrollment would have placed us) that we had some teams that could have ended their run but after we joined 1A I gained more respect for how good Beechwood was espically after we ended their strangle hold on 1A in 95 by barely hainging on to a win that I thought would come easily before the game was played. That was then and this is now so I have no idea whether or not Beechwood would move up but if they do it would add another small school super power to a already packed AA. I think AA will be great with or without them but if they do it would make AA the most exciting class to watch every year for me. As for Mayfield, I dont think it makes good sense. Mayfield's enrollment is in decline and a good portion of the kids comming into the system are Mexicans that do not play football. As it stands now it is hard for Mayfield to mount championship threats every year rather we now only have truly championship calibre teams every 3rd of 4th year and I think that trend will only continue as the schools football base continues to shrink as almost every new housing development is now located outside of the schools boundaries.
Good post; I was about to post the same thing about Mayfield. The economic downfall in the past 4-5 years has really impacted the city school's enrollment. Very few young families are staying in Mayfield anymore and hardly any are moving into Mayfield. If it weren't for the influx of Mexicans, there is no telling what the city enrollment would be down to. Actually some would say that the influx of Mexicans has caused the city schools to diminish in numbers because many people send their kids to Graves or other schools because of them. So maybe that cancels each other out. Anyway, I don't see Mayfield's program getting stronger until the city itself has a turn around and more kids are attending Mayfield. I am not sure they can hold the dynasty if it keeps getting worse. Their best bet is to stay 1A (unless we can turn the Mexicans into "football" players instead of "futbol" players). As for Beechwood, they would have a much better chance in 2A.

I would hope they decide to move up, AA would be much more challenging.

For the record, if I was making the decision for Beechwood I would NOT move up. I would test the waters the first two years and then evaluate the idea again. I would also try to play NCC and at least one other 2A power each of those first two years to see where I stood with the teams in the next class up.

I'm suprised, I thought you would be all for moving up. Outside of Mayfield it would be a cakewalk for the Tigers. Year in year out your boys can hang with anyone, why waste time?

Beechwood won't move up to 2A IMO at at least not in the very near future. They have become accustomed tto winning titles and their fans won't accept anything less from the program. A move to 2A and I believe they won't enjoy near the success in 2A that they have had in 1A over the past 20 years or so. Beechwood and their fans are sort of spoiled and they want more banners to hang and want to be able to paint more years up on that wall near their locker room. They aren't to concerned with who they beat as long as they win. They look at this new setup and I'm sure they are drooling at the chance to think they will march to more and more championships..Just be careful of what you wish for..

Zig--I love the way you lay it out there . . . . I can have respect for that.

But honestly--it comes down to this . . . . . if Coach Rash decides that it is the best thing for the young men in the program--they will stay or they will move. But it will be something that is decided on that level. (I know that is hard to believe).

There are a lot of times where the Beechwood parents get a bad wrap for wanting to continue the current level of success. I am sure they do--(THANK GOODNESS!) But I have found one thing to be true--the Beechwood faithful has confidence that this program can beat anyone at anytime at any place. I don't think that a move to AA would bother them in the least.

If Coach Rash thinks it is the right move--I think it will be made. If not--they may wait.

I can appreciate your defense of Beechwood QS and in all honesty they have every right IMO to stay at the Class A level and probably should. Their enrollment numbers say they are a small class A school and they should by no means be ashamed of staying and playing schools at that level IMO. I'm not jealous of Beechwoods success, envious yes but one of these days my beloved Panthers may just catch you guys on an off night and I want it to mean something. Such as knocking you off the top of the heap or in a district game..May never happen but I will be there if it ever does:dancingpa . :ylsuper:

Beechwood needs to move up to retain their integrity as a top notch small-school program along with NewCath.
I suspect Beechwood's reputation and integrity are intact, regardless of whether or not they make the move.

Given that philosophy, why shouldn't NewCath move up a class?

Beechwood needs to move up to retain their integrity as a top notch small-school program along with NewCath. Neither programs' season would be complete (in my mind at least) without playing eachother in a game that meant something state-title wise.

Integrity?

How about New Cath moving up and joining Highlands in 3A?

What a great district rivalry that would be.

If the class breakdown we have now is accurate Beechwood and Mayfield would be heavy favorites every year to play in the 1A title game. For Beechwood, add to that if they stay in 1A their district games would be:

Bracken County

Bishop Brossart

Ludlow

Walton-Verona

Dayton

Bellevue

I don't know any other way to put it, that is an ugly district schedule from Beechwood's point of view. However, if you move up to 2A your district would include natural rival NCC, Newport, and Holy Cross. And, 2A would be very competitive for Beechwood making a title once every five years a realistic goal instead of winning half of all the titles.

Anyone?

If it's going to be Beechwood and Mayfield in the 1A Championship game every year then Beechwood should look forward to a lot of Championships in the coming years

I suppose Beechwood is due for a win against the Cardinals, given their sparkling 0-2 record against them.

Actually, Mayfield-Beechwood could be a regular occurrence in the semifinals, thanks to some strange geography. Makes you wonder if Lexington Christian and/or Pikeville has an in with the KHSAA. ;)

Thank goodness that we understand our opponents a little better than this . . . . . . . . .

No one needs to remind Beechwood that they are 0-2 against Mayfield.

The 2002 Mayfield team may have been one of the best that I have ever seen or prepared for.

I was just going by the way the Mayfield team played in the 1A Championship Game last December . What ever you say you can't deny their level of play then . If the core of that team remains lets hope then that they have recovered and that the coaches can reinstill the Mayfield winning tradition and have a great season this year .
