"Friendsgiving"

Featured Replies

Never heard of this before, but tonight Daddy's Little Girl and about 15 of her 2014 NewCath grad girlfriends are getting together for "Friendsgiving".

Each one has to bring one item for a Turkey Dinner to be shared by all, including dessert. DLG drew an easy one.....she as to bring dinner rolls and gravy....she was praying she didn't pick the turkey. :lol2:

She has a really neat group of friends that have been together since their freshmen year.

My son and his friends have been doing this for a few years.

Lady I work with said her daughter and friends were doing one.

My best friend and his girlfriend don't have family to spend Thanksgiving with. This year me and my girlfriend are cooking and doing everything so they can spend time with us. First time I've ever cooked a turkey!

I've done a couple over the years. One has stopped since the hosts moved out of town. I have one more on Friday.

I've got great memories of family Thanksgivings over the years where mostly everyone is on their best behavior and in loving high spirits, yet there would always be a sibling that didn't hold back from trying to get under other family members' skin with knocking someone's life, one upping everyone else, or trying to get a rise out of others by imprudently bringing up political topics etc...

I'm guessing that some of you might've had similar type siblings along the way, or... shame on you, you might've been that imprudent one that didn't have the good sense to know which topics to keep off of the table, or how to keep your big fat mouth shut.

The SNL Adele Thanksgiving skit last Saturday night would be a good example, or even the 1995 movie "Home for the Holidays" starring Holly Hunter, Anne Bancroft, and Robert Downey Jr.

Going way back as a kid before any of my brothers or sisters were married, and it was just them and my parents, there would be the yearly ritual of one of my sisters ridiculing another one of my sisters because she was a finicky eater, and she would always insensitively ask her when she was ever going to grow up and eat like a real person.

That never went over too well and would jump start a quarrel with the finicky eater running out of the room crying, and everyone else asking our insensitive sister why she had to pull this every year. This literally continued on until they were adults, which made it even more ridiculous.

Anyhow when I was in my 20's and 30's it wouldn't be too unusual for a group of my friends and I to have a little get together party later on Thanksgiving evening to let our hair down, catch a breath of fresh air, have a few beers, share a joint, and lean on one another for whatever dysfunctional family Thanksgiving situations we had experienced earlier in the day. These gatherings tended to be rather therapeutic and a necessary relief.

Now that I'm in my early 50's those type of get togethers have mostly faded out, but with my good and not so good memories of Thanksgiving, I also have fun memories of those after parties with friends as well.

Had one of these at a buddy's place this past Sunday. After the office Thanksgiving dinner last Thursday, then Sunday, and now tomorrow with the family, I might need all day Friday to recover.

I do this yearly. We always have a get together amongst close friends the Saturday after Thanksgiving. While everyone loves Thanksgiving, it can be stressful at times, some people have to attend three on one day, others two on one day.

So for our "Friendsgiving" its all about relaxation and having a good time. No cooking food all day long, no traveling back and forth from house to house to cover all the bases and rushing around to get there on time. It's all about just hanging out and having a good time with people you love. It's more like a superbowl party than Thanksgiving, but myself and my crew enjoy it more than a super bowl party.

Daughter and several of her friends at PT school celebrated on Monday evening.

Been to a few of these over the years. Usually a great time.

I've done it many times. Sometimes we go a bit more creative, sometimes a little more traditional. One constant...a beer exchange. I have two beer exchanges for the Thanksgiving holiday actually including the Friendsgiving edition.

My favorite Friendsgiving was a year when one of my friends put his 20 qt cast iron cauldron on a tripod over a fire, he provided veggies and potatoes for the stew, and everyone who came had to bring a protien. It was awesome. Proteins included duck, bear, elk, bison, alligator, snake, squirrel, wild boar, rabbit, quail, and a couple of store bought varieties. Turned out fantastic.

I've been to a Friendsgiving a few times before. Was going to host one this year but the best day for my close group of friends is Friday night and that happens to be the night of a good friends engagement party. Will try to hold one next year.

May even try to arrange a BGPgiving.

My daughter's group has been doing it for years, my son's group for a few years now.
