I have already commented on Stoops, but I want to add. James Franklin is a better coach than Stoops. What he did at Vandy was amazing. Butch Jones at Tennessee on the other hand is not and has not done a better job as a coach. Tennessee had infrastructure, tradition, recruiting base, and a starting roster when he took over that KY still doesn't have in year 3.

That is what some people just can't get, no way did they start at the same spot. UKs win over UT a few years ago was a case where UT would beat UK 9 out of 10 times but the 10th game just happened at the right time.

UT had slightly better talent and a loyal football fan base to back it. Same scenario with UK when they got rid of Tubby and went to the final 4 a few years later. UT hired the "better" coach and had a much better brand to rejuvenate. KY is a basketball school, in football it's almost like building an expansion team.

Fair enough. But in terms of wins and losses, and success against the SEC, we both know where they stood. Just about, if not completely equal. In the words of Bill Parcells, "You are what your record says you are"

I did and all you said was they were both bottom feeders at the same time. That does not mean that both programs were in the same situation.

And Tennessee finished ahead of Kentucky 3 of those 4 years.

Tennessee never went 2-10 during their futility...Not once. They were in the position then that we are now. They were 5-7 in Dooleys final two seasons and in Butch's first season. Tennessee has facilities and tradition and a crazy fan base to sell. They have national championships to talk about. Kentucky football is to Tennessee basketball as Kentucky Basketball is to Tennessee Football as far as comparing the two schools is concerned. (Realistically KY basketball is comparable to Bama football as far as the SEC goes). To say UK and UT football were in the same position is comical! It's going to take a long time to build the football program. They are now where I thought they would be. Last year's 5-7 was a total surprise. I saw Stoops tenure going something like this:

Year 1: 2-10

Year 2: 4-8

Year 3: 5-7

Year 4: 6-6

Year 5: 6-6 or 7-5

Year 6: 7-5

Year 7: 7-5 or 8-4

 

It will not be a quick fix. I'll give Stoops a 6 so far due to bringing in better talent and winning the games he is supposed to win. The next step is to steal games that we aren't supposed to win.

Our fan base has no patience. I remember everyone calling for Brooks head but Barnhart kept him around another year and then voila bowl games 3 straight seasons.

I can accept being wrong on the record factor, but my point about them being competitive in the SEC remains. Of those 5 wins I'm sure 3 were OOC atleast. I'm not sure about Kentucky's wins that year, but it's not like saying they are comparable is far off the beaten path.

 

That being said, I should have looked at their record that year before making that statement. Apologies!
