That Papal message must have really resonated.

John Boehner will resign from Congress

Speaker of the House and West Chester Township Congressman John Boehner will resign from Congress and give up his House seat at the end of October, according to an aide in his office.

Boehner made the announcement to his stunned GOP colleagues at a closed-door meeting Friday morning--the day after Boehner reveled in the first-ever papal speech to a joint session of Congress.

Boehner's five years in the speaker's chair was rocked by turmoil, as he faced constant rebellions from his right flank. Those pressures were hitting a new high this month, as conservatives pressed him to use a government funding bill to defund Planned Parenthood.

Needs to work on his tan full time.

John Boehner To Resign From Congress At End Of October

In a statement, Boehner's office said that he had only planned to serve in Congress until the end of last year, but changed his plans when former Republican Majority Leader lost his seat.

"The Speaker believes putting members through prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution," his office said in a statement.

I can't blame him. He had a harder time managing the members of his own party than any speaker I can remember in my short life. Probably for the most difficult time since the Democratic party leaders of the 1960s.

He kept his job long enough sit behind the pope, which must have been a great moment for him and now this House is someone else's problem.

Good luck to him.

Isn't surprising. There was a huge movement in the house to remove him from his leadership position.

Wonder if he will come back to West Chester and live happily ever after. Pretty cool guy the few times I met him, went from the head of his HOA to SOTH, not bad.

I am going to reserve comment until we find out why. I certainly hope it isn't a really bad health issue.

Seriously, though, Boehner is a pretty moderate and sensible guy. The nuts in his party have driven him bonkers and made his job very hard on him.

But who will Rand Paul blame stuff on now?
