Can you imagine the look on Wolfzorn's face when he opened up his check envelope? I know what I would have done.......but burning bridges in education is probably not a good thing. Especially if you are not tenured....I beleive your 1st 5 yrs are on year to year contracts and they can let you go for whatever reason they want.

No, he is a basketball guy but not someone that could coach at the Varsity level by any means.

Accumulated from several very good sources...

1. Wolfzorn was not hired back, along with several others, as a teacher by the principal which apparently is a yearly occurance at the high school but, none the less, his decision.

2. Wolfzorn was told that he was still the basketball coach---apparently this was in early March--and it was his intent to stay on as the coach. Several of the DIII schools in NKY have non-teachers or teachers not at their school as head coaches (Beechwood, Silver Grove, Calvary) so this wouldn't have been a problem. Tough to get teaching positions to fit all coaches at small schools sometimes.

3. No one that I spoke to knows of any relationship between the AD and coach as a relative (I don't know).

4. There is a definite parent issue (one incident took place which may be fueling these rumors) but not sure of the extend to their involvement here.

5. I believe he was not released as coach until right before the April 30 deadline and I'm guessing it was by letter and not a sticky note but no reasons were given to the coach as to why.

 

So, with that said, the principal made his decision about the teaching and that's his to make. However, did Wolfzorn become a poor coach during March and April? What would make them get rid of a guy who WANTS to be there when they have had trouble keeping coaches there? He was a good coach and did a heck of a job this year turning that team around in the second half of the year (I witnessed the Beechwood/Bellevue game late in the year and they nearly pulled off an upset).

We're getting into semantics. The coach was NOT told he was not coming back. He got his last paycheck with a note attached. Letter, sticky note, whatever...

Bottom line, the principal doesn't know how to 1) fire someone 2) consult his AD (Who is NOT related) and 3) determine what's good for "his kids" and what is not (athletically). Your post is pretty much dead on but I can also add this. The "definite parent issue" is EXACTLY where the added pressure came from to make this decision. The only thing that changed from February to April is that the principal got tired of hearing from this parent. The principal developed pucker butt and decided to save himself.
