July 20, 201511 yr Not in regards to "most majors" but, rather, in regards to increasing viewership. I don't watch golf nor do I play any more. However, I find myself going to the TV when I know Spieith is in contention. I did the same for Tiger.
July 20, 201511 yr Could be. I remember ordering the Golf Channel when Tiger turned pro because 3 out of first 4 or 5 tournaments were only on the Golf Channel. The difference between now and then was that Tiger was hitting the ball unlike anyone not named John Daly back then, he was doing things to courses that we had never seen. Courses then began to "Tiger Proof" by lengthening the holes, narrowing the fairways and growing the rough longer. Jordan Spieth, isn't doing anything that just blows you away the way Tiger did. He just plays really good golf...that should be enough, but for most fringe fans it isn't.
July 20, 201511 yr Spieth's year thus far rivals any year Tiger had. He just doesn't move the meter though. It got some attention that Spieth was in contention for his third consecutive major, but can you imagine had that been El Tigre?
July 20, 201511 yr I think the competition is a little tougher now than when Woods was in his early twenties. If Spieth even equals Woods record, it would be a bigger accomplishment
July 20, 201511 yr If he would have won today, i would have said Spieth would drive as much interest as Woods. Not so certain now
July 20, 201511 yr The bogey on 17 was unexpected. This. But at the same time I fully expected him to make that bear of a putt on 18. Just seemed like something he could do with his confidence.
July 20, 201511 yr This. But at the same time I fully expected him to make that bear of a putt on 18. Just seemed like something he could do with his confidence. There's no doubt he's got the "it" factor. I love watching him play the game.
July 20, 201511 yr I think Jordan is more like Jack than Tiger. Jack was incredibly gracious in defeat. Jordan is too. I think I have more respect for Jordan now than before the British Open. He battled like crazy to do something almost unheard of...falls short by one stroke and then hangs around to root Zach on in the playoff. You think Tiger would do that if he lost a major by one stroke? Doubtful. I am as big a Tiger apologist as there is but in the who is a better person dept., it is Spieth by a wide margin. That being said, I don't think Spieth can ever be as big as Tiger. The whole Tiger thing from 1998 on was just something we will not see again in my lifetime...
July 20, 201511 yr ^^ It's been said many times that Jack was the most gracious loser in the history of sports...
July 21, 201511 yr I do not think he is "must see" yet. PGA Championship time he will be one of the spotlight golfers but so will Tiger and Rory coming off his injury. As will DJ and Z Johnson. Maybe when he gets 5 or 6 majors ....... but Tiger was so hot for so long and was different.......young, in-shape, fist pumping etc. and admittedly chasing his idol.....that he was magnetic.
July 21, 201511 yr I think Spieth will be the closest thing to Tiger we have seen. He has incredible market appeal. Unlike Tiger, he is approachable, believable, gracious, open, very likable, doesn't use foul language.....I have read where he is a marketing dream. There will never be another Tiger, but Spieth will be setting a new, different standard.
July 21, 201511 yr Spieth's year thus far rivals any year Tiger had. He just doesn't move the meter though. It got some attention that Spieth was in contention for his third consecutive major, but can you imagine had that been El Tigre? Ask yourself this. Which would be the bigger story at the upcoming PGA Championship. Spieth in contention down to the wire on Sunday? Tiger - currently ranked 250-something - in contention down to the wire on Sunday? Answer that honestly and you have your answer to the OP's question.
