July 27, 201511 yr Kansas City ain't exactly the Big Apple. And went 29 years without making the playoffs. In 5 years they will more than likely be right where the Reds are now.
July 27, 201511 yr They traded a guy they knew they had no chance of resigning....Who have the Reds held on to that they couldn't resign? As I recall, Greinke actually demanded a trade and later apologized for how he departed KC. Loogy's point remains, though, that KC acquired some serious talent as a result of that trade (and deservedly so).
July 27, 201511 yr Shields? Butler? Beltran? Betlran was traded and that was 10 years ago. Shields yes. Butler isn't a high-level player. So they've let one guy walk and traded 2 others they knew they couldn't bring back. How is that different than what the Reds have done with the likes of Cueto and (in the offseason) Latos?

So they've let one guy walk and traded 2 others they knew they couldn't bring back. How is that different than what the Reds have done with the likes of Cueto and (in the offseason) Latos? The original point I believe was that they don't resign their players. They always have traded them when their value was at their highest and didn't suffer financially. The Reds signed Phillips, and Votto to contracts that will handcuff them for years still. I still like the Votto deal, it had to be done IMO, but that means the Phillips deal shouldn't have even been considered.

One is an exception, not a rule, right?
July 27, 201511 yr Had they signed Shields to even a 1 year deal, they still own 3 lefty prospects more than likely.
July 28, 201511 yr Guy from Baseball America talks about the 3 prospects the Reds got. Listen: Scouting Reports On All Three Guys The Reds Got From The Royals | Mo Egger on ESPN 1530
July 28, 201511 yr UK alum Joe Blanton was DFA'd to make room for Cueto. Kinda shocked he is still in the league. Had a few OK years and made himself some serious money.
