According to Calpreps 'project a match-up' the result of Mayfield vs the 2A state champ are as follows:

2014 - Mayfield 21- DeSales 17

2013- DeSales 28 - Mayfield 26

2012- Mayfield 31 - NewCath 21

2011- Mayfield 24 - Holy Cross (Cov) 23

2010- Mayfield 28 -NewCath 27

 

Obviously it's not an exact science, but the program thinks they would go 4/5. I am surprised that it thinks they would lose to DeSales 2013 team, but not their 2014 team. Still, except for 2012 all of these were projected to be very close, which bodes well for the future of 2A in my opinion.

I am basing my opinion on a healthy Mayfield team versus a healthy Holy Cross team.

The DeSales 2013 team was better than the 2014 team. We cruised through the playoffs that year. I really don't think Mayfield would have beaten us.

Mayfield had no answer for BJ Combs and the Jones kid in the backfield for Hazard. If we are going to play the game comparison angle, Beechwood had a running clock on Holy Cross that year and beat them 69-26 ... and the score is closer than the game was. New Cath had handled Holy Cross 31-14 in their first match up. I saw the playoff game between NCC and HC and to me, NCC was definitely the better team. The difference in that game was Holy Cross QB Kyle Fuller. He single handedly won that game for HC. He was able to scramble out of pressure and made some great plays out of plays that would have been big losses without his play. He was incredible that game. I believe many NCC people would say that loss was one of the most disappointing ones in recent times for NCC because they were the better team.

However, after watching one quarter of that championship game, I told several people I had never seen Jonathon Jackson look the way he did. He was obviously hurting and a different player than I had ever seen in the previous four years. Mayfield also lost their best defensive lineman to injury versus Beechwood in that semi-final game. It is always tough playing the injury card and that is why I always say I would prefer to play teams that are completely healthy so there are no what ifs after the game. If the injured Mayfield team plays Holy Cross, then Holy Cross might have a chance but I doubt it. If the healthy Mayfield team plays Holy Cross, Mayfield gets the easy win.

Truly opinion but I think Fuller and Beal were a tough out for anyone in the playoffs that year. The Fuller kid had one of the fastest releases I've ever seen, completely negated Somersets d line strength that year.

I would have to agree with this. That was a special team.

My guess on the past five:

 

2014 - I think DeSales would have been too strong for Mayfield.

2013, 2012 & 2011 - Mayfield would have won 2A

2010 - New Cath had a heck of a team but I would give the edge to Mayfield.

 

So I see Mayfield winning 4 of the last 5 in 2A.

 

By just playing the common foe thing, which was Murray. Mayfield had some trouble with Murray but pulled away and won 21-10. DeSales beat Murray 14-7 and there was a very controversial call in the game which hurt Murray. The game would have been close, that's for sure.

What about 2009?

I think Mf wins 3 maybe 4. 2011 we were too hurt, with Jackson, Scott both not healthy and we were down 2 linemen. Last years team shocked me as much as any. All I could chalk up last year to was that God must be Mf Cardinal fan. They just refused to quit or lose. They had the most swagger of any team I have ever watched

 

This year will be a mystery too, if the line play develops this team will be really good. They are loaded at the skills spots but they are also 1 injury away from trouble. Should they have anything happen to Bright, Kenemore or Arnett they do not have proven replacements. I think someone made a good point that Desales has developed a depth advantage on most of the rest of AA

So Hazard never had any kids out? Jackson may of been injuries but he never played like it on defense because he was all over the field. Jackson's problem on offense was there line play and receivers couldn't block hazard.

All I can go by is what I saw. I had seen Jackson play more than a half dozen games in his career. The Jackson I saw in that game was not the Jackson I had seen in those previous games. It was clear to me before the first quarter ended that something was wrong with him. I am sorry he was injured. It is disappointing to have to bring this point up as I have on more than a few occasions discussing that game. I hate that it detracts in any way from Hazard's win, because they controlled that game and very well may have won it versus a healthy Jackson. I am just calling it like I saw it.

I think they may have possibly won in 12 and 13

In 10 I like that NCC team and in 11 I think Holy Cross and Glasgow were both better than the Hazard team that actually won 1A

 

Hazard hit there stride at the right time. I don't think neither could of beat Hazard. Somerset did beat Hazard but Hazard choked many times in the red zone that game. But that game did benefit hazard to prepare them for Mayfield or whoever.
