We were up 28-13 in the third when we let off. It was a mixture of both.

 

I have no dog in this fight... just what I saw

 

DeSales never "let off", but the coaches began calling a more conservative offensive game. From what I saw it was basically the staff saying "They can try to comeback and beat us, but we aren't going to take the chance of helping them do so"

 

Truth be told they did the same thing last year as well.

 

In 2013 the gap between the two wasn't as wide as last year though. NewCath made it interesting in 2013 and the conservative approach was almost a mistake...last year DeSales could have locked it in conservative on offense after that first TD. DeSales defense was next level in 2014 and NewCath didn't stand a chance.

 

In short it is arrogant to think DeSales "let" NewCath hang close in 2013... maybe they win by more if they stayed aggressive..maybe a turnover swings the game and NewCath actually wins. Just my view..but I thought DeSales was probably 14-17 points the better team though.

As a NewCath backer.....I agree with everything. That DeSales team last year was on a whole different level. They probably could have beat, or at least hung with, any team in the state IMO.

This year with Johnson back, i look for him to have a really good year. He's already committed to Louisville, so he won't have that pressure on his shoulders. Defense once again should be stout. And as always numbers will be a factor. We'll be somewhere between 85-90 players.

I thought 2014 was much better than your 2013 team.

 

2013 was a good offense and a good defense.

2014 was a good offense (though not as dangerous) and an elite defense.

What seems to be the problem, he answered your question. What answer are you looking for? This is high school football not t-ball. We did play a lot of players and the last time I checked it was the other teams responsibility to stop us.

 

No problem & it wasn't my question. But here's where I was coming from. Coltpride had made the pretty self assured comment that 2A runs through DeSales and I was looking for him to support that statement. The Colts have been the best in class for the last 2 years, but that's a short period of time. Additionally, I didn't think the 2013 score reflected a blow out or "easy victory" that he had stated and I was questioning that. Up two scores in the 3rd Q didn't equal a blowout to me.

 

Maybe DeSales is on the cusp of a 10 year dominating reign in 2A, but to say they "Run 2A" is hyperbole at this point. I didn't think the body of work presented for the past 6 years is that extraordinary when compared to some others. Having back to back championships and 80 - 90 players on the team is a great way to put a dominance in place. but I'm not considering it a dynasty yet.

 

Football fans will recognize the dominance of Trinity, Highlands and Mayfield and would be apt to accept a statement that their respective classes "Run through them", but I don't think that is the case with 2A and DeSales at this point. The Colts will have a strong team this year, but will also have at least one major obstacle in their path back to Bowling Green.

Well said, I think we are all just excited about our 1st two state championships in football ever. I don't feel like DeSales gets the respect it should, so we will play and talk less. Mayfield is great and maybe we will both get to play. Win or lose two programs.

I agree with the fact that the 2013 teams were closer in talent level but I can tell you forsure that 2013 was better than 2014. I played on both teams and the talent in the 2014 class was just as/better than the talent in my class, 2015.

Maybe NCCs team was better in 2013 than they were in 2014 and that's why they hung better with Desales.. also, maybe the fact that the 2013 Desales team was there 1st title team and they're usually harder than the 2nd. More pressure and still some doubt.

I have no dog in this discussion, but I decided to go to the KHSAA website to check stats on the 2013 v 2014 Desales Teams to find what the final stats say and found the following:

 

2013 - 14-1 (only loss to CAL 24-27)

Scored-667 pts; Allowed 158 pts

Rush Yds - 4,372; Allowed - 1,183

Pass Yds - 1,226; Allowed - 1,484

 

2014 -14-1 (only loss to CAL 0-17)

Scored - 482 pts; Allowed - 101 pts

Rush Yds - 3,495; Allowed - 1,092

Pass yds - 1,285; Allowed - 1,382

 

Results: 2013 Offense clearly more productive, but the 2014 defense gave up over 8 TDs less than 2013. I think I'm splitting hairs as both teams were terrific.
