Coach Cal, UK closing in on a contract extension

Featured Replies

If Cal leaves for the NBA, it's not like UK gets some type of buyout, do they?

If Coach Cal is wondering about the NBA versus UK, here are some good arguments in UK's favor - Scott Brooks, Monty Williams, David Blatt, Tom Thibideau. All four coached successful NBA playoff teams and all four very well may be out of a job by the end of their season.

Blatt and Brooks are in way over their heads.

Are they good coaches? Yes.

Are they able to handle the superstars or do they know how to "coach" them? NO.

I believe you're right.

This extension is meaningless IMO.

UK is offering him NBA money to work half the amount of time. He's in his mid 50's, doesn't pay for a drink or meal in Lexington probably, complete job security, seems happy, his wife is happy and UK is gonna get him to 10 million soon.

Or he can get the same contract, move to another city, less job security and can spend the last decade of his quality years getting on a plane every other night, chasing an NBA ring.

I agree with all of that, but I don't see how a 1-year extension changes anything that wasn't already there...except for the 1 more year.

I hope he sees it like that.

I agree with everything you said, but he isn't working half the time as a UK coach. He is coaching on the sidelines half the amount of time. But he's working his tail off recruiting and other "Ambassador" duties constantly.

Exactly.

I dont think UK had to do anything. I know the thoughts of the NBA are lurking. I am wondering if the NBA playoff teams really feel like Cal would be the answer. Typically they chase NBA guys. Assistant coaches or players.

I would think the most attractive CB coach would be Coach K. - He has proven he can work with NBA players by coach the olympic team.

That is a heck of a good point Coach B! With all the coaching in the Olympics and of pro players, why isn't Coach K rumored for any of these openings? He coached Kyrie Irving and Lebron (Olympics), right?

NBA has tried to lure him. He turned down the Lakers years ago so most figured if he would turn them and Kobe down he is not going to the NBA.

If Coach K wanted to coach in the NBA he could call any GM with an opening and say the magic word and it would be his.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

That means nothing. Its not about the money, the NBA having a better job than UK or anything like that. UK will be able to pay him just as much as any NBA team most likely, he is King here in Ky, and can stay as long as he wants. He is not dumb he realizes that. However do you honestly believe that matters to him about which job is better for him? He loves to do what people think he can't do, he loves to prove people wrong. The only time he has failed in his life is in the NBA, and people still say he wouldn't do well. So you can bet on it that he is going to want to prove people wrong. Now he is not dumb though, he won't leave for a job like Pitino did when you have to build it back up. It will have to be a job that he can be successful at right away.

Has the UK faculty senate weighed in on this yet?

How do contracts and extensions work if he were to take an NBA job, say next year for example? Does that said team have to buy out the UK contract? Does UK let him out of the contract? Does he get the NBA money, as well as the UK money? Contracts in all sports never really seem to mean much. Just interested.
