They call the infection C-diff (colitus). It is caused because of all the anitbiotics that he is on. They would have to treat it with yet another antibiotic.

I had this last year. It's a bad condition; but is easily treatable -- as I found out after several months of torture.

 

Sounds like Justin is making a slow but steady recovery. You have to live day to day and relish the small victories when you're in a situation like this. God Bless him and his family.

I can't see them not accepting Anthem, in the end. A lot of times, while contracts are being negotiated, providers have to send notices like that out in case the contracts are not final by the beginning of the fiscal year, in this case, July 1. Also, Drake is in the process of becoming part of the Health Alliance so I'm sure that's slowing negotiations down. No way Health Alliance drops Anthem. I'm sure they'll get something done within the next couple of weeks.

 

For the record, I'd give an arm before I would go into those war rooms.

 

I hope this gets fixed soon so these patients can receive the proper and necessary care needed.

An update from about an hour ago....

 

They had Justin in his chair today for 2 hours and I think this was to long for him. He started to get agitated. His C-diff results came back negative. The wound on his stomach has shrunk from 15.5 centimeters to 12.5. He was pretty active today and was keeping his eyes open between little power naps. I can't wait for him to come out of this coma, I know it takes time and he has a lot of healing to do.

Thursday Justin got moved from room 3-08 to 3-12. The hospital had some addmissions and were running out of space.

He also go a smaller treach (a Portex #7).

A speech therapist came to see Justin. He was sleeping and she rang a cow bell and he opened his eyes. She did some other things to him like snapped her fingers in front of his eyes and he blinked. They come in every 2 days and test him on different things and then rate him on a Rappaport scale. This is the third time they came to see him and he went from a score of 3.4 to 3.0. The goal is for him to get to a 0.0.

His brain CAT Scan results showed a slight increase in his ventricles (spaces inside the brain where spinal fluid sits) his are slightly larger than they should be. Dr Shutter from UC checked the scan today and she said she was not to alarmed and they will do another Scan in a week or so. Worst case would be that they would have to insert a shunt, this is a tube that would be inserted in his brain and would drain the fluids into his abdomen. This would be permanent.

 

The head nurse more or less told me today that Justin will be going to a nursing home until he comes out of his coma. It breaks my heart but there is nothing I can do. I just love him so darn much, I miss him, I miss his laugh, I miss his voice, I miss his hugs. I could go on and on. Everyone please keep up the prayers Justin really needs them.

Not much happening today. Justin has now lost 35 lbs. He got his treach capped today. They won't remove the treach until they are sure that he does not need any more surgeries. They consider him in a marked coma (inconsistent reponses to stimulation and not responsive to simple commands) but this is a step up he was in what they considered an extreme coma.

 

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Is this 35 of his original weight? Because I think he was severely bloated before and I wasn't sure if it was just him losing water weight.

Justin was pretty active today - with moving around and both eyes open. They are now giving him 7.5 mg of ritalin instead of 5 mg. He was up in his chair for 1 1/2 hours. His wound is now 10.6 centimeters - it started out 3 weeks ago at 15.5. I asked his doctor about his infection in his lungs and she said as far as they are concerned it's gone. He's off all antibiotics. His doctor has been on vacation the last 2 weeks she told me today that she was a little disappointed that he wasn't out of the coma but that it takes some people more time than others. He was sleeping when she came in to talk to me, so I got next to his ear with a chip bag and was crushing it to make a noise and his eyes opened up. She liked the fact that this made his eyes open and then he started moving around. Thanks again to everyone and please keep up the prayers

Justin was in his chair for 2 hours today. I think his chair is to small and he looks very uncomfortable in it, I mentioned this to the therapist and he is going to look into getting Justin a different chair. If he gets a better chair we can take him outside. Maybe some sunshine and fresh air will help.

They removed the heart monitor that was attached to his chest. Now all he has is his feeding tube and a Pluseox attached to his ear - it monitors his heart rate and the oxygen in his blood.

The speech therapist came today to monitor Justin's reponses/reactions to different types of stimulation. He moved up another level on the rappaport scale he went from a marked coma to a moderate coma. His scored was 3.0 on 6/14 and today he scored a 2.2.
