Justin is unblelievable!!!! He is talking now. My brother Rob from Columbus was working with him on Friday night and had him saying, Hi, Bye, Ok, Yes and a couple of other words. My Aunt Linda went over to visit with Justin this morning and now has him saying everything. She called me around 10 and gave Justin the phone he said "Hi mom, I love you". It's unbelievable how fast he is progressing.

Justin had his Modified Swalloing Evaulation today at Clermont Mercy Hospital. He did fine with the puree and honey liquid but aspirated on thin liquids. The speech therapist will be feeding him thicker liquids and working with him on strengthing his muscles. Then he will have to go for another Evaulation before he can start on thin liquids. I asked him what was the first thing he wants to eat and he said "steak".

 

Justin is learning to move himself in his chair using his feet and the rails on the walls in the hallways. He snuck out of theraphy today and they caught him in the hall.

 

He is not afraid to say what is on his mind. He told grandma Saturday to "sit down and shutup". Tonight he told one of his favorite nurses to "get out" of his room. I met a lady at the care center who also has a son who came out of coma and she said they will say mean things or things that can hurt your feelings. I'm sure Justin isn't trying to hurt anyone and that he just gets frustrated.

 

He got an alarm put in his bed tonight because he keeps trying to get out of bed. The first time he tried is when I walked my mom to her car today. I asked him what he was doing and he said "I want to go home". It broke my heart. I told him he would be coming home but not yet and that he still has some healing to do.

 

He is getting good at pushing the call button and telling the nurses or aides what he wants. Like he wants to get in his chair. He pushed it tonight and the aide asked him what he needed and he told her too that he wants to go home.

 

I just called and talked to his nurse and she said he is sound a sleep. They give him 50 mg of Trazadone each night to help him sleep. She also said that his bed was as low to the floor as it could get and he has mats on the floor on both sides of his bed.

I got a call this morning at 8:30 from the Care Center, Justin was once again trying to get out of his bed so the aides put him in his chair and put him up by the nurse's station so they could keep an eye on him. Well he undid both of his safety belts and ended up on the floor. They said he didn't hurt himself and he looked and acted fine when I saw him. So he now has an alarm on one of his belts.

 

Physical therapy is working with him each day with his walking. He is doing real good holding on to the parallel bars and walking forward and backward. They tried yesterday to get him to walk with a walker but he didn't like it. His eyes got big and he turned white. So they are going to hold off on the walker thing for now. He still does not have good balance. He hasn't found his mid point yet.

 

Speech therapy are supposed to start working with him 5 days a week. A therapist came in this afternoon and fed him half of a pudding. They will come in each day and just feed him small amounts for now. They are also working with him on different types of mouth and throat exercises.

 

He was very confused today. When the swing shift nurse came in today and asked him what he did today. He said he worked at Fed-x loading trucks.

I think this news of his "escapes" is very promising! It means he's a fighter -- strong willed -- bullheaded. He needs those qualities more than anything right now.

On Friday Justin and Grandma took a road trip to UC hospital so to the sticthes remove his stomach wound. While they were there they ran into Dr Stehr, the trauma doctor who performed both of Justin's exploratory surgery's. Grandma said Dr Stehr was quite pleased and amazed with Justin and they had a nice talk.

Also on Friday Justin had x-rays taken of his neck and shoulder because on Thursday he was complaining of pain. We figured it was caused from his fall from his chair on Wednesday. We got the results back today and all is fine.

Justin is going stir crazy. He said probably 50 times on Saturday that he wants to go home. Or he says "Mom get me out of here." I think he is missing out on so much theraphy and that he would be so more advanced if he was in rehab. He is so bored. He want's in his chair, then he's not in his chair for long and he says "Take me to my room, I want to go to bed". They get him in bed and 10 minutes later he wants up. If he was a Health South they would be working him so hard and would keep him busy. I still have not heard anything from Medicade and this is what is holding up his rehab.

 

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

I hadn't read this thread in a couple of weeks, progress seems to be amazing, I can't wait to see how far he progresses!

Today was a great day at the Care Center. Theraphy had Justin with assistance walking with a walker!!!! There was probably 10 people or so watching him move down the hall and when he was done everyone was cheering and clapping. I did what I do best and was crying like a baby. They were also saying things like he's a "miracle child", "he's the comeback kid".

 

Also today around 3:00 Sandy the finacial worker at the Care Center brought me Justin's Ohio Medicade number. Hooray !!!! So I immediately got on the phone to call Sheila (my case worker at Health South)and she just happened to be on her way to the Care Center. She did'nt know I had a number for him yet she was just stopping by to check on him. Isn't it strange how some things work out? She got right to work on getting his paperwork together and ordering him blood work and etc. They are having a meeting at 8:30 am on Wednesday at Health South. So I should know more info then. Thanks to everyone for all your support and prayers.

I received a call from Sheila my contact from Health South he will be moving on Monday. I have scheduled him transportation for 8:00 Monday morning. Health South wants him there no later that 10:00.

Justin is going through another stage. He told Grandma today that he needs peace and quiet and that he has to many thoughts going through his head.

I plan on staying with Justin the first couple of nights to see that he gets comfortable with his new surroundings. So wish us luck and keep up those prayers.
