My mother always said (fill in the blank)

Featured Replies

What is some of the wisdom your mother passed along to you while growing up? Or maybe it was something funny? Something emotional? Something memorable? A life lesson? What are some things she shared with you on a regular basis.

My mother always said ______________________.

There are 2 sayings of hers that stick out the most to me:

"Don't wish your life away." I was always anticipating the next big thing in life and she wanted to keep me focused on the present.

And then she'd often say, when I was older, "Don't ever be house poor." I certainly took that one to heart.

She loved me. Every day. Wow do I miss that.

...my full first AND middle name

The universal sign that you'd better run and hide.

"I always find out, so you might as well just tell me".

She was extremely connected in the mom's network.

"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

My Mother died of complications from Alzheimer's disease about five months ago and we all miss her greatly.

"just tell me the truth and I promise you won't get in trouble for it" then I would finally confess and I would get grounded. When I called her out on her promise she would then say "I am not punishing you for what you did wrong, I am punishing you for lying"

Life is like a box of chocolates.

Oh sorry, it is actually what OUR mom has said to us. Lol!

Nothing good happens after midnight. That is why we always had a midnight curfew. She was pretty much right about that...depending on your perspective.

When anything big or surprising happened, good or bad, mom would exclaim “Lord help us!”, then dad would immediately chime in “The Saints preserve us!”. Only in a Catholic family ha ha.

It must be ingrained because I find myself exclaiming one or the other sayings in my own house from time to time.

Thinking back on it now I just find it so endearing.

So blessed to still have my mom. Her wisdom amazes me from flowers, gardening, cooking to life. A few of my favorites:

"Always water violets from the bottom never pour it on them directly."

"There is a chance of frost until the 15th of May. So if you plant anything in the garden make sure you're able to cover it."

"Pull candy is best made with friends and a cold marble slab."

"Be careful what you you wish for."

Pertaining to football:

"If it ain't broke, bleeding, or hanging off, you're not coming out of the game..."

"...if you're a friend of my child you're a friend of mine."

I've carried on the same mantra with my own children and their friends.
