The UK defense is the best in college basketball history because kids cannot score the ball with any skill anymore. Go to the Sam Dekker thread and you'll see me giving plenty of credit where credit is due. This is the first time ever for me where I want a UK guy on the first team(KAT) and folks get sensitive because I want the other UK guy off(WCS) and put on the second team. Are you saying you'd rather have WCS than KAT if you had to choose? Everyone puts their own teams together differently. I'd take KAT and Okafor over WCS as a First Team All America just like NBA GMs will take KAT and Okafor over WCS in the draft. I said straight up I'd probably be more comfortable with WCS as a 2nd team guy, but what he does on D is as rare as it gets for a guy his size. He isn't just a guy you feel comfortable switching everything with because he won't get killed, but instead you can legit assign him to guard a 1 or 2 and expect him to lock that guy down. Just ask yourself how many guys his size can be expected to do that job. You can count them over the past 20 years on a finger or two. Use the Wisky game as a starting point for the sake of this debate. Are you comfortable with Okafor or Towns being on an island with Frank or Dekker? No? Me either. The question for Cal is which one do you lock up with Willie. If you have a defender that can take out the biggest offensive threat regardless of size or position you are playing chess instead of checkers. That's playing with the impact of an All American. That's all I'm saying...
March 31, 201511 yr I'm just not understanding how the best defensive player, on a historically great defensive team. in a defensive season is getting dismissed like this and called one dimensional in favor of Okafor who is completely one dimensional.

That's all I'm saying... Cal has a luxury no one has. He can try all kinds of things that no one else can. Towns on Frank. Willie on Dekker. Lyles on Dekker. Willie on Frank. Options. Dekker scares me more than Frank. If that doesn't work then Cal has options. Hell, he can throw multiple big guys on Frank and wear him out in that manner. I'm never comfortable about anyone Okafor is guarding but the good thing about Okafor is that he'll outscore the guy he is guarding. :lol2: I'll take it.
March 31, 201511 yr My first thought was no way he's AA but the defensive vs offensive one trick pony argument is compelling. Still, I would put him second team as you just can't quantify how he affects a game.

March 31, 201511 yr Instead of joining this argument, I'll throw out what a great job Coach Cal has done developing this young talent. WCS had no idea how good he could be coming out of high school. He probably still doesn't know what level he could get too. Happy for Willie and hopefully him an Towns can both play great Saturday & Monday then play rock, paper, scissors for Most Outstanding Player in the Tournament.
March 31, 201511 yr If I had to pick between Willie and Towns, I'd lean towards Towns as being 1st team and Willie 2nd. However, as was mentioned, Willie has a very unique skill set. He's the best defensive player in the country and it's not close. The only guy I can recall at his level (or better) defensively is Davis.

March 31, 201511 yr I wonder how many voters for the AP or the National Association of Basketball Coaches that voted WCS 1st team are UK Homers? As far as first or second team I'd be interested to see how close the vote was between WCS on the 1st team and KAT on the 2nd team.
March 31, 201511 yr Cauley-Stein was the lowest vote getter on the first team, but he did receive votes from 45 of the 65 AP members. Wright was the leading vote-getter on the second team.
