March 31, 201511 yr Towns received 8 first team votes and 139 "points". A first team vote was worth 5 points but I can't figure out for sure how many points the others are worth. But 8 votes on first team compared to 45 for Cauley-Stein is a pretty wide margin and a sign that at least the media at-large does not agree with the concept of flip-flopping them. It doesn't help the argument that while we know there is a big difference in their offensive games that Towns had 9.7 PPG compared to Cauley-Stein's 9.3 PPG. No one else got more than 4 first team votes.The 86 point difference between D'Angelo Russell and Delon Wright is a pretty wide gap between the first and second team, and the gap between Cauley-Stein and Towns is 146. March 31, 201511 yr It's also worth noting that the NABC All-American team has the exact same five on their first team. Four of the second team are the same too with Wiltjer replacing Portis. Cauley-Stein is a consensus First Team All-American, having been selected on the first team on each of the four that comprise it. I honestly don't have this overwhelming feeling one way or the other about this issue. But it is clear that most who are in a position to choose disagrees with anyone who thinks WCS shouldn't be on there. Towns wasn't named to a single first team and is a consensus second team choice. He was even dropped to third team by the Sporting News, but made enough on the others to be "consensus".
March 31, 201511 yr One thing I feel that is getting overlooked is that KAT wasn't the KAT we see now to start the season. He started off somewhat slow compared to what we are seeing now out of him. Plus UK didn't start really running its offense through him until like 5 or 6 games into the SEC season IMO. If second half KAT was here to start the season, he would've been a no doubt first team AA.

March 31, 201511 yr I said straight up I'd probably be more comfortable with WCS as a 2nd team guy, but what he does on D is as rare as it gets for a guy his size. He isn't just a guy you feel comfortable switching everything with because he won't get killed, but instead you can legit assign him to guard a 1 or 2 and expect him to lock that guy down. Just ask yourself how many guys his size can be expected to do that job. You can count them over the past 20 years on a finger or two. Use the Wisky game as a starting point for the sake of this debate. Are you comfortable with Okafor or Towns being on an island with Frank or Dekker? No? Me either. The question for Cal is which one do you lock up with Willie. If you have a defender that can take out the biggest offensive threat regardless of size or position you are playing chess instead of checkers. That's playing with the impact of an All American. That's all I'm saying... I'm curious, just looking for your opinion. Do you think if, a big IF, UK/Duke plays he throws WCS 1 on 1 vs Okafor?

March 31, 201511 yr Congrats to WCS and KAT. Question .... which player would you rather have on your team? I might be of a different opinion as most here. Just to give a different view. While I do think KAT is a better player and I think he should be on 1st team over WCS, I'll use this Duke team as a perspective. Using this Duke team I would take WCS at the 4 over KAT while sliding Okafor to the 5. Or vice versa. Okafor would provide the offense while WCS provides the defense. Then again, there isn't many other teams that would prefer WCS over KAT, it just so happens I think he would be better than KAT on Duke. Just an opinion though.
March 31, 201511 yr Author Agree to disagree. I don't want guys who can only score by dunking or offensive rebound putbacks as a First Team All American. Is wanting KAT over WCS as a First Team All American really that egregious? I was just curious as to what you think qualifies someone to be a 1st team All American, and so based off these things you think it should be based off offensive ability only. Obviously this is all just everyone's opinions, so I was just curious on what you thought. As you said we just will have to agree to disagree. For the record I would have had no problem if it was reversed with KAT as the first time All American and WCS 2nd team.
