Willie Cauley-Stein First Team All American

Featured Replies

But if you're the best defensive player in the country why isn't there a spot for you on the All-American team? If you're going to put Okafor on there, and he's just awful on defense, why can't you put his opposite number on there? He's as much one-sided as Cauley-Stein. Like it or not college basketball is a defensive game right now. The defenses fast outshine the offenses. So why would the best defensive player not be an All-American?

I agree with Randy. He's not 1st Team All-American...

Put him on the second or third team. The fact that he is first team shows that the quality of college basketball is at an all time low.

Be that as it may currently defense is more important than offense at the college level. He's the best player on the most important side of the ball.

So? He sucks offensively. He's not a first team All American no matter how hard you try to justify it. KAT should be first team before him.

UK vs. Duke. National Championship game. UK is down 1 point. The first team All American will not be involved in the play at all unless he manages to get an offensive rebound and putback. Forgive me for wanting First Team All Americans to be more than garbage guys.

And if UK is up by one who do you think will be on Okafor? Okafor sucks on defense, should we take him off as well?

I can't disagree with that. That said, looking back over the years there have been SEVERAL "Presumed one trick ponies" make the AA Team. WCS isn't the first and won't be the last. It's just that most of them were Shooters that put up stats that everyone can see.

Again, so? So by your logic Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace should have been First Team All NBA. Is that correct?

I get it, Willie is the best defensive player in all of college basketball since Anthony Davis. That said he still has never been anywhere near as efficient as AD was on offense and he can't hold a candle to him defensively. Hell, WCS is still getting credit for affecting Jerian Grant's shot when it was actually one the Harrisons who contested the shot. If you're asking me, the guy who everyone thinks should be the #1 pick in the draft because of his higher ceiling should be First Team All American. Not the guy who will have a decent NBA career coming off the bench playing 12-20 minutes a night. Not sure why you are so heartbroken over that. I'm not the only one who can see.

I'm just not seeing All-American... DPOY, maybe.

He disappears in too many games, both offensively and defensively. That being said, when he is focused in, he may be an All-American.

Yeah, guys that can do more than make highlight dunks are usually more valued.

In sorry, is this thread about being First Team NBA? I guess I misread it. I apologize. I thought we were discussing the best defensive player in a defensive game being named All-American.

That really surprises me that you would think that.

Has it happened before?

What would you say should qualify someone to be a first team all american then? Just skilled offensively? To take your earlier post about who I would want with the ball down one, I would not want him. However if the team is down one then there is no one else I would rather have than him. The way he can guard all five spots is a big reason UK has one of the best defenses of all time. Even the last shot against Notre Same he may not have been the one to alter the shot. However his defense didn't allow Grant to get into the lane or set up anything for anyone else to have a shot to be involved in the play. Grant had one spot he could go and that was the corner and it allowed the others like Harrison to come over to contest the shot without worry.

I get offensive skilled guys are more fun to watch and have more direct impact on a game that we can see. However being only offensively skilled shouldn't make you an all american either even though that happens every year.

A defensive game? We see different things. I see kids who possess zero offensive skills. Not offensive juggernauts being shut down. To each his own. Congrats to Big Willie!!!!!

He's not alone. Hell, SOME UK fans feel the same way. The non-blind ones that is.

Agree to disagree. I don't want guys who can only score by dunking or offensive rebound putbacks as a First Team All American. Is wanting KAT over WCS as a First Team All American really that egregious?
