March 20, 201511 yr Scarface remake set in LA 'gets green light' A remake of iconic crime movie Scarface - to be set in modern-day Los Angeles - has reportedly been agreed. Universal has commissioned Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan Herman to pen a new version of the blood-soaked classic, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain will reportedly direct the new production, while Marty Bregman - producer of the 1983 version - is also said to be involved in the update. Itself a remake of the 1932 original set in Chicago, Brian De Palma's 1983 film told the rags-to-riches story of Cuban immigrant Tony Montana's rapid rise within Miami's underworld. Good idea or not? I honestly don't expect it to be very good...I think they would just try to over do everything the last movie did which was already over the top (but in an awesome way) and make a mess of it. #hopingforthebest
March 20, 201511 yr That makes it the third version of Scarface to be made within 90 years...second one in the last 35. No es bueno.
March 20, 201511 yr I say they cast CWB and call it Scareface. I think that could work.:thumb: Edited March 20, 201511 yr by BigVMan23
March 20, 201511 yr So the '32 original was about Italian gangsters and set in Chicago, the '83 version was about Cuban/Hispanic gangsters and set in Miami, and this one is going to be set in modern-day LA...is it reasonable to assume - particularly based on the fact that they're pitching this as being this one written by the same writer as Straight Outta Compton - that this version is going to be based around African-American gangsters?
March 21, 201511 yr Iconic. I am usually all for modernizing anything but, Tony Montana was an absolute classic!
March 21, 201511 yr Not a fan. I don't necessarily dislike the whole premise of remakes, but I think they need to be chosen wisely. I'm not sure this one sounds as if it was. I'd rather them re-release the last Scarface. I'd certainly consider going to see it again in a theater much more so than I'll consider seeing this remake. Unless, of course it proves me wrong and gets great reviews. Lastly, not a fan of Hollywood reminding I'm getting old by remaking another movie that I'm old enough to remember being a big deal the last time around. :stop:
March 24, 201511 yr Can't wait. I thought Scarface was pretty stupid and poorly done an I am not a movie snob. Some modernization and just a hair of realism will make this one WAY WAY WAY better than the one with Al Pacino. I enjoyed Menace II Society WAY more than Scarface.

I kind of hope not. So much of what the original and the DePalma remake are about is that the main characters are immigrants. It's about outsiders in American culture. I suppose there's a way to do that with African Americans, who are certainly disenfranchised even in their native country in great numbers, but it's not quite the same.

Never understood the fascination with Scarface. It's interesting, but I definitely don't love it.
March 25, 201511 yr I like Scarface very much. It runs long, and drags in times as a result... But the movie itself I find quite enjoyable. Then again, I love Al Pacino and have suffered through many of his duds, so by comparison to some of them Scarface is a masterpiece. I will not watch the remake.
March 25, 201511 yr I am surprised Quentin Tarantino didn't do this. Just imagine all the blood and gore he could pack into a modern version of Scarface.
