Should the Sweet 16 seed instead of draw?

Featured Replies

I was just wondering since most districts seed their tournaments, and the region is a mixture of seed/draw, would it be fair for the S16 to seed instead of draw. I like the anticipation of the draw, and I think this year worked at really well, but last year was terrible having the top 3 teams in the state in the same bracket. Just wondering everyone's thoughts. I am sure this has been discussed before.

No, because there is no way to properly seed teams from across the entire state.

What would you use to determine seeding that isn't subjective and in some cases as random as drawing?

I lean more towards this thought process, but I can see why people want to see it seeded as well.

Which regions seed their tournament?

Which regions seed their tournament?

None. At least none that I know of.

I assume when silo11 says "mixture" he means that it's because the slots are assigned at random but two district winners never have to play one another, it's always set as district winners vs. district runners-up.

A group of us were discussing this at the Hend/Hop game and my thoughts were more towards the "how" would you figure the seeds. They were upset at that top bracket last year. Some of the group thought to seed through the polls. I disagreed stating the most reliable poll (BGP) wouldn't be recognized, however the Maher poll seems to be pretty well thought out but that is extremely analytical and no eye ball. The reply is the NCAA does it, why couldn't we.....money and time.

Just was wondering if people agreed with me or not, it seems the consensus is the draw.

No, because there is no way to properly seed teams from across the entire state.

Well said... I wouldn't mind a round of 32... I know you all will kill me because everyone loves the S16 format... just a thought though. I know logistically it would be a nightmare.

Districts are seeded (mostly) because all of those teams play each other in the regular season. There are actual results to base the seedings on. Any seeding plan that could possibly be used for the Sweet 16 would be controversial from the get go. Someone would always feel they got robbed.

This is what I was referring to.

I do not think this is apples to apples though.

I could see using maybe the LIT rankings or a type of computer rankings if they seed teams. But this format has been used so long I doubt they change it anytime soon.

I'm not a fan of seeding at all. Being from a tiny school, getting the best draw possible and m-a-y-b-e getting an upset win could let you get to the district final & regional. Seeding leaves you one-and-done every single year. Not the end of the world, but just having that c-h-a-n-c-e keeps the carrot on the end of the stick.

However I do feel...if you are going to let a loser advance...seeding the region is a great idea.

Seeding the Sweet 16? Please no.
