February 28, 201511 yr Iona coach hates today's game. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/02/27/sports/ncaabasketball/ionas-offense-goes-80-as-other-teams-hit-the-brakes.html?referrer=
February 28, 201511 yr “If you talk to most guys and ask them, ‘Where do you play your best basketball?’ most of them will say, ‘At the park,’ ” Cluess said. “They’ll say, ‘That’s where I’m at my best because I’ve got the freedom to do what I can do.’ ” This guy makes a lot of good points in the article in my opinion.
February 28, 201511 yr Maybe he needs to watch UK against Arkansas today! That product wasn't too bad.
February 28, 201511 yr Maybe he needs to watch UK against Arkansas today! That product wasn't too bad. This is the first year that I would say it, but there are some BAD teams that are not that bad. UK is a very very good team. There really isn't another team in the country that I would even put near a really good status. This is a HORRIBLE year for College Basketball.
March 1, 201511 yr I sure wish more college coaches were like this guy. 35 second shot clock is a joke too. If the women can play with a 30 second clock, why can't the guys?
March 1, 201511 yr I thought the NCAA did a great thing with how they were calling games to start last season. Players adjusted and you got a product like the UK/Wichita State game which was tremendous. We've now gone backwards where you can drape all over guys again and just simply pound the air out the ball. It's brutal to watch. I would like to see the lane widened and removal of a timeout call. The game is so over coached.

March 1, 201511 yr Yes, way too many timeouts, with the combination of team and media timeouts. It's a joke. The last minutes of games can last 15-20 minutes. Other thing shortening the shot clock does is limiting the late game foul barrage.
March 1, 201511 yr Shortening the shot clock makes the problem worse, not better. What happened when it went from 45 to 35? Scoring went down, not up. If they don't clean up the constant clutching and grabbing as well as eliminating the charge call nothing else they do matters...

March 1, 201511 yr Do you all think the grass roots problems and over emphasis on AAU basketball with a lack of fundamentals has hurt the collegiate product? Athletism over skill is what I see when watching games!

The charge calls have gotten so bad that the players go for the flop over playing defense anymore. It gotten so somebody hits their backside on every play.

March 1, 201511 yr Which is why I contend the only solution is to eliminate it all together... I'm the biggest critic of how bad refs call the charge today. But you can't eliminate it all together. You can extend the charge circle and define much more clear rules and punish flopping. Also have a problem with offensive players who over sell or create contact to get to the line and jump shooters who kick out and flop. Some refs don't want to hear this but it's true. There is to much reaction to body reactions and acting and not enough on what they actually see.
